James Keys Hotel This hotel is listed in the Green Book at 409 Southside Avenue, Asheville and appears simply to be the same hotel as the Booker T. Washington, but under a different name. The hotel is not shown on the 1925 Sanborn map, but is first listed in the 1930 City Directory as the Booker T. Washington. It continues to appear in the city directories under this name – and as the Criterion, in 1939 – until the hotel is vacated in 1944. By the 1945 City Directory it appears as the James Keys Hotel. The 1951 Sanborn map shows it as an unnamed hotel for African Americans. —Andrew S. Edmonds
