According to the nearby Scouth Carolina Highway Historical Marker, Charlies and Sarah Fitzgerald opened "Charlies Place" as a supper club in 1937 and it was a stop on the "Chitlin' Circuit." Many noted entertainers, including Billie Holiday and Otis Redding and the Drifters are among the singers who stayed in the motel. The "Shag," a form of the Swing danced to beach music is said to have been invented here. The building(s) are located in "The Hill" neighborhood in Myrtle Beach.
