Detailed History
Described in an Afro-American newspaper article in "Vacationland Notes," by Melvina Jackson, Motel Gordon opened in 1953, and was owned by Dr. Robert K. Gordon, a physician from Dillon, SC. The article describes the hotel as being in Atlantic Beach, "14 miles from Myrtle Beach," although it appears that the towns' developments have merged. There was a previous hotel, "Gordon Hotel" that was destroyed in 1955 by Hurricane Hazel. See, Afro-American Newspaper, 07121958 P. 15 "Vacationland Notes."
