Detailed History

Manhattan Restaurant This restaurant is listed in the 1947-1950 Green Books at 816 South 13th Street, Wilmington and is identified in the student report as demolished. The restaurant may still be extant – buildings occupy the parcel on which the restaurant likely sat – but it is unclear. The 1943 City Directory lists it as the Manhattan Tavern at 810, while the 1947 City Directory lists it as a restaurant owned by James Wheeler at 816. In the 1948 City Directory, 816 is vacant, and no 810 entry exists. By the 1952 City Directory, 816 was occupied by the Lula Feguson grocery. Meanwhile, the 1951 Sanborn map shows only a store at 820 and the multiple-building Caison Brothers laundry facility at 1221 Dawson Street. The 1955 Sanborn map shows the same laundry facility, but the store at 820 is now labeled a dwelling. One additional dwelling is shown at 802. The New Hanover tax card indicates a construction date of 1940 for the main building on the laundry facility parcel, but what about the brick building in the northeast corner of the parcel. Might that be the restaurant site, or was it located one lot to the north (no longer extant)? —Andrew S. Edmonds
