Detailed History
Payne's Tourist Home opened around 1926, although the structure was built in 1900. Strategically located in the booming commercial Red Cross Street district, the home was a notable gathering place for African Americans. Meetings to organize an African American public library in Wilmington were held there in 1926. While the building is extant, it has clearly undergone many architectural changes since the mid-twentieth century.
