Biographies

These individuals represent some of the many talented, industrious, and resourceful African Americans who struggled to establish independent lives in freedom in Charlottesville and Union Ridge after the Civil War.
The two communities, though five miles apart, were knit together by strong ties of marriage and kinship and by educational and career aspirations. Residents often lived in one place and attended school or went to work in the other.
