Engineer—Present.
                 You are directed with the least possible delay, to make the necessary examination, and report to me in writing at the earliest possible moment the following distances, in yards, as near as may be without a regular survey,—There is no necessity of being exact, within a very few yards, an approximate measurement will answer the purpose.
 
1st The distance from C to D, on the map sent you by Major Houston, in his letter of January 21st, and the length of the crest of the redoubts and Cr'emaillere line traced by him.
 
2nd The distance from C to G.
 
3rd The distance from G to H, and the length of the Cr'emaillere line there traced.
 
4th The distance from A to B, and the length of the crest of Fort Esperanza and that Cr'emaillere line. 5th the distance from G to A. 6th the distance from A to E 
 
7th the width of McHenry Bayou
 
I am desirous that this report should be made immediately.
 
            You will also at once apply to Col. Cobb, as directed in Maj. Houston's letter, above alluded to, to have his requisitions for tools and materials for the construction of the contemplated works at once forwarded.
