Bureau of Pensions
Dear General
Yours of 17th to Gen Heth has been referred to me. the error pointed out by you in having the 20th New York instead of 42nd New York in your brigade organization was a clerical error, and was perpetuated in the casting on the [?]. It had been noted and a new [?] ordered, meanwhile, the number has been cut off and the correct regiment temporarily painted on. We note what you say regarding the position of your brigade. Our papers are all at Sharpsburg but in a few days we shall have them and will communicate with you as to the data upon which we located the position of your brigade line.
Very respectfully
E. A. Carman
