October the 21 1862
 
i now take my pen in hand to let you now i have ben sick with the feaver agen i am giten well i am goin to drilin in to or three days We haint sen eny rebels sence we have ben in Maraland i see a lot of rebels in the prisen in Washington we think they will settle up this before the firs of january the rebels want to settle i cant think no more to rite about war now uncle i was glad to heare that you was al well i hope this will find al well tell uncle john he better not com down heare caling i will come back and go with him we can git whisky there cheaper the we can to heare one man died in our rigement last nite one bured yestaday 
 
Mos i want you to turn over the sap trays and take care of my citle i dont now but i shal be to home to help make shugar in the spring Mar when i git back i will by you tat silk dres nant i will by you a [?] dres and Mary a [?] and orra [?] we have put up for winter quarters by the side of the potomack river about fifty rods from the cannall
 
davis has sent i a flag of truse to lincon he wants setle We haint seen no frost heare yet the treas air grean and and it is warm wether heare now But we shall have frost before long we think we dont now but we shall be to home before the snow gits deep
 
you take half of them potatos
 
uncle orrick is sick he haint ben able to step a step for a weak without help and i dont no as he is any better he is in the hospittle john has ben puty sick but he is giten better i ges he will git along
 
i want you al to rite as son as you git this for i like to hear from you
