Headquarters 13th regt Mass Vol
Williamsport Md. Nov 8th 1861
Dear father.
Not having received a letter from you for some time, I thought I would write you.
I am very well indeed and hope that you and the folks are the same. The weather is getting to be pretty cold now, and especially nights. We pitched our tents yesterday and slept in them last night.
We intend our mess to have a stove in our mess our tent, and we will manage to sleep warm.
The floor of our tent is covered with straw, which keeps the dampness of the ground from us. / We have heavy frosts now, and I suppose that it is nearly if not quite as cold, as it is in Massachusetts.
I was on picket guard on the Potomac just below the town, the other night, and it was pretty cold I assure you
I had a letter from Uncle Henry the other night, and was glad to hear that you were all well.
There are a few of the boys from Co B coming home on a furlough Thanksgiving, and if you would like to have me I can come home Christmas.
Those story papers that you sent were very acceptable. and I should like to be at home on Thanksgiving day first rate.
I went and measured myself this AM, and found that I have gained half an inch, ie five feet ten inches tall
I weigh 140 lbs and am gaining fast. Our camp is situated within sight of Virginia.
How is business in Boston?
I had a letter from Mr Messinger, and a good long one to. I should not wonder if George Worcester came home Thanksgiving as he has applied for a pass furlough. Do you want me to send my ambrotype home.
I guess that we shall have winter quarters here, but do not know.
What do you think about the war. / How are things looking in Boston and thereabouts.
I should like to see Uncle Henrys house, and mean to about Christmas time.
I guess that we (our mess) will have a pretty good time Thanksgiving day as we intend to have a feast.
Give my love to all the folks up country, and tell them to write me. I will write again soon, and let you know all the news &c &c Please send me a story paper once in a while and oblige me.
Give my love to Mother, and Ada and Henry and hoping that you will write soon I remain
your affectionate son
Chas. E. Leland.
Please send me a few postage stamps in next letter.
