Charles E. Leland to Charles M. Leland, 18 April 1863
Camp near Fletchers Chapel Va
April 18th 1863

Dear Father
I took the opportunity to send a letter to you through the kindness of Lieut G. S. Worcester, who leaves us to day or to morrow. He has got a very "soft thing", and I am glad of it. I should like to go home with George very much but as no one has had a furlough under the "new bill" in our Co, I cannot as yet. As to pictures I would get one taken in a minute, but I have no money and the boys are all of them without a cent. There is an operator about three miles from this camp, who takes portraits for $1.50, of and they are very good too.

I have been wanting one taken for this long time, but shall have to / wait I suppose until the pay master comes. Speaking of pictures, I would like very much to have you send the carte de visite's of the whole family, Mother, Henry, Ada, and yourself. As to the commission I shall wait and be patient.

The expected move did not come off, but we expect to move every day. I am glad that you like your new home, and every thing pertaining to it.

I would like to see it first rate, and hope I shall before long. We are having splendid weather now warm, and pleasant. Give my best regards to Mr Brockay, Wife, and sister. I believe that Mr Brockay paid us a visit once when we lived in Chelsea. Give my love to Uncle Henry and Aunt Kate.

Have you heard anything from Uncle Willard or cousin Fred, if so write and let me know. There is no news here with the exception that Genl Foster is relieved, and can stand out fight for some time longer. I think that Charleston will fall before long, and great will be the fall thereof.

The news is not very encouraging from the West, but I guess we will do something before long. As there is no more news of any consequence, I will close this short letter by sending much love to Mother Ada & Henry.

Your affectionate son Chas E. Leland

Ps. I get my papers regular.
