Hon. E. M. Stanton,
Secretary of War
Washington City D.C.

Sir:
I have the honor herewith to tender you my immediate and unconditional resignation as Brigadier General U.S. Vols. I was mustered into the service as Colonel of the 75th Ohio Vol Inft'y on the 16th or 18th of September 1861, and was promoted to my present rank November 29th 1862. Having served continuously from the beginning up to the present time, three years, six and a half months, I am entitled under existing orders to the privilege of being mustered out. I am induced to claim this privilege now when the war apparently is drawing very near to its close from the fact that the condition of my family and home affairs imperatively demand my personal attention.

Very Respectfully
Your obdt servt

Brig Genl Vols.
