Charles McKay was born around 1823. By the early 1860s, he was probably living in New York. He enlisted in the Union army in July 1861, and he mustered in as a captain in Company F of the 57th New York Infantry. The regiment took part in the Peninsula campaign, the Seven Days’ Battles, and the Battle of Antietam. He resigned in October 1862. On July 3, 1863, he became a captain in the 84th New York Militia Infantry, and he served for one month. He applied for a federal pension in May 1880 and eventually received one. He probably died around 1890.
