Captain
Enclosed herewith I transmit for the action of the Brigdr Genl Comd'g Special Genl Order No 144 assigning Capt John J Dix to duty at this post as Asst Comry of Subst of date of Septr 20th 1864

The necessity and reasons for my action in the premises at the time are set forth in said order, and I trust they will appear sufficient to warrant its approval by the Genl Comd'g

Capt Dix is a citizen of Texas since the year 1834, is a property holder of responsibility, a man of family, and one whose reputation for integrity is untarnished. He joined our forces near the breaking out of the war, raised a Cavalry Company and served with it on the frontiers of the state as Captain under commission from the Government of the state until the expiration of its term of enlistment, was active in assisting to defend the country west of the Nueces after its abandonment about one year ago, and of the Frontier State organization was the only man who volunteered with this command upon its organization for this field of action. And being specially fitted by his intelligence, energy, and industry has been employed since then and until his recent assignment as agent of the Comssy and Qr Mrs Depts. As such he accompanied these forces in the field virtually performing the duties of Brigade Coms'y & Qr Mr discharging them with ability and to my entire satisfaction. For these additional reasons I deemed the assignment of Capt Dix one which was well merited at the time, and still consider it one which ought to be confirmed.

His Bond and oath of office have been executed as required by law and are also herewith transmitted. Under these circumstances I would bespeak for the appointment of Capt Dix the favorable action of the Brigr Genl Comd'g and his recomendation thereof to the District and Dept Hd. Qrs. /

I have the honor to remain
Very Respectfully &c
(Signed)                      John P Ford
