My own Dear Darling Julia
I now seat myself to inform you of my good health and most sincerely hope those few lines may find you enjoying the same great blessing It was with great joy that I received  your very kind and loving letter I was glad to hear from you once more We are still away down in this wilderness we have been here nearly three weeks but have had no fight yet there has / nothing happened here of any importance since I wrote to you last We got a mail today we only get a mail about once a week I believe the Rebels has left from the other side of the river The news came in this evening that Richmond is taken with heavy loss Memphis is also taken without one being killed on our side I think the south is about whiped out but I would not be surprised if we would have to whip France yet before the we get home but if she is going to try it I am willing to stay although I would like to see my own darling Julia as I hope I shall have the / pleasure of calling you my own my love is ever true to you and hope I have your love the only future happiness that I can see is to have you for my bride I hope I have not spoken to bold or freely my love is so great for you I can not express in words you are absent from my sight but you are ever in my mind oh that I was with the once more how happy I would be then but that time has not come yet nor do I have any idea how soon it will be but I hope the time is near at hand I have not paper to write a very long letter but what is of [faded] is the true sentiment of my heart the weather is fair at present for our way of living we have no tents yet we dont expect to have them as long as we stay down here I will write John a letter and send in this as I only have one envelope

Well my love I must soon close Write soon dont let my very short letter make you write short ones but write me a long letter I love to read your charming words it is sun down and I must close Remember this is from your ever affectionate lover my love is ever true to you and I trust yours is the same to me if so I can be happy if not so I can never be happy but farewell my love I must quit be sure and write soon a long letter for I love to hear from you Address as before so farewell my love good night I wish I was with you from your Lover DWH
