Duff G. Calhoun to Andrew P. Calhoun, 30 June 186X
Fort Moultrie June 30th

My Dear Father
I reced your last yesterday; it was the second I reced since leaving home; I have written three letters to you & was only waiting for one from home to answer it; the first one I reced was not more than a week ago, so you see I have not done my duty so badly. We all had our expectations raised to the highest pitch by the news of Saturday; I thought from the first accounts I heard from the battle near Richmond that we would completely annihilate the grand army of McClellan; now I look upon it as a second Chickahominy affair; the only difference being that we lost more men; It seems / that our Generals are determined to neuteralize every victory by giving the enemy time to make good their losses. Grimke Rhett is killed, poor fellow, the C.S. lost in him not only a good soldier but a man who would have done her honor in the senate chamber. I am very glad that I have been ordered here, as there is a great deal of sickness principally country fever I believe in the other battallion of our Regt at Church Flats; one of our Lt, Charles Pringle, has just died from it; several other officers are sick at this time with it. It was reported, though I do not believe it, that Alick Haskill was killed on Saturday; if it is so both he & his wife, Decka Singleton that was, died on the same day; the saddest coincidence I ever / heard of. I hear that JCC has left Jacksonville, he must have done so as he has not answered my last letter which was on buisiness; if it is true let me know where he is now. My health is pretty good, better than I expected. Tell sister that I will write her in a day or two.

With love to all
Your affectionate son
D G Calhoun

P.S. I visited Sumpter on Saturday saw WRC & S P Ravenel, both begged to be remembered to you.
