George W. Young to Amaziah Young, 8 August 1861
Oakland August the 8th 1861
Dear father I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am very well we got marching orders yesterday morning and packed up and marched to oakland. it was very hot and I had to stand guard all night last night we are going to leave here this evening on the cars but dont know where we are going they say we are going to have to march sixty miles and that I dont like pretty well I wish I knowed where we are going so as to tell you where to write to. it was not fair to let us build fortifications and then leave them to the Ohio boys
they say there is no mistake but what we will have to fight now some says we are going to phlippi and some to beverly and some to manassas
I will write as soon as we get stationed I will write and you must answer as soon as you can give my best respexts to all I must quit writing and help strike tents no more at present but remain yours truly
