Cheat Mountain pass
August 15th 1861
Dear Father
I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well and hope these few lines may find you in good health.
I received a letter from you and Rebecca a few days since stating you all had the measles and was glad to hear that you all were getting better I also got your letter of the 4th last evening.
we have marched about 100 miles since I have wrote before. we came through Webster, pased laurel hill rich moutain philipi and beverly. our regiment and the 13th are camped right together I have seen Mose hallgarth, Eliot black Ed Andrews and Jonathan Gordon. they are all well and harty. two Ohio regiments and the 15th Ia. are camped / 6 miles further on and the 14th Ind still further. there is a talk of the brigade marching against Stanton and I wish we would, for I am spoiling for a march.
all our marching has been done in the rain at the rate of 28 miles a day over the mountains.
we have lots of brigade guarding and scouting to do.
Some of our boys are awful tired of soldiering and some of the boys have heard they cant hold us more than three months and they are awfuly excited about it. for my part I shant eat any of it untill I know it is certain.
tell uncle milt and uncle George they must send me a letter once in awhile. write soon
George W. Young
