George W. Young to Amaziah Young, 18 August 1861
Cheat Mountain pass August 18th 1861

            Dear Father
I take this opportunity to inform you that I am well, and hope these few lines may find you all in good health

we have had a tiresome march, but I believe the most of them are getting over it it rained all day yesterday and is doing likewise to day. we have got 17 pieces of artillery here with us and one cavalry company, and there is four regiments ahead of us and it is only 25 miles to the first rebel camp. I expect our reg and the 13th Ia. will get marching orders before long and then we will go right on to Stanton and clean them out as we go General Reynolds is with us, and we are still encamped at the foot of cheat mountain we are getting a new suit of clothes but we have not any money yet there is an awful excitement among the boys in the 13th 14th and 17th regs they have got to think that we cant be kept / more than three months, but I think they are awfuly mistaken

I cant say that I am tired of soldiering but I am tired of mud and rain for it rains nearly all the time here. I think we will have a fight before long with the rebels but if we dont the most of them cant say they came home without a fight for we had seven in the regiment this morning.

I want you to write and let me know what you are driving at and how the crops is there for i tell you they are mighty poor in Md Va. I thought when I began to write I would fill up a sheet of paper but my head aches so I guess I will have to quit. of all things I can think of I think the most remove and farthest out of our reach is sweet milk and corn bread

There is black berries here in abundance but we cant get out side of the camp to get them tell mother I think the Cecesh will be cleaned out and we all will be at home in 3 months from now.

I guess I will have to come to a close. Remember me to all

Yours Affectionately
George. W. Young
