Dear Miss I take the present oppertunity of answering your letter which come to hand some days ago I was glad to hear that you are enjoying good health I am not very well at the present time The reason I did not answer your letter sooner is this we have been on a march we crossed over into the Land of Dixey on the first day of March on the first of nite of March we took a little town by the name of martinsburg / 15 miles distance from the potomac river we took quarters in the town for our troops we stayed there some three days and then took up our line of march for this place we arrived here about sundown we took several prisoners at boath places includeing thre rebel Officers This is a very nice camping place Here yesterday evening there was a skermish took place between our picket and the rebel picket one of our men got killed and three or four wounded our men killed some three or four of the rebels rebels we are within 11 miles of winchester it / is reported that the rebels is well fortifyed at that point we expect to march on and take that place in a few days we are only a waitting for Gen Shields Briggade to come up Gen Banks is below us about 4 miles toward Charles Town with 75 thousand men I expect we will have a warm time a takeing winchester They say that the 13th Ind Regt is in Gen Shieldes Brigade I am so eager to see them I cant hardly wait till it comes up I am acquainted with one whole company in that regt well Becca I believe I have told you all the news / that I can think of this time
you said something about your mother wanting me to work for her next sumer tell her I will not hire to nobody else until I see her If I get back all rite and the war is not over I think I will come and tend the farm for her next sumer I will bring my letter to a close by sending my best respects to all the folks and my enquireing friends no more at present only I remain your friend William A Minor
