George W. Young to Amaziah Young, 3 June 1863
Murfreesboro Tennessee
June 3th 1863

Dear Father
I take my pen in hand this evening to address you a few lines I am well at present and hope these few lines may find you in good health I rec'd a letter from you a few days ago the first one I had got for a long while.

Well the army is laying still here and I dont think there is any likelihood of us leaveing here soon except on scouting expiditions. we have the strongest fortifications here I ever saw there are between town and stone river Col Wilder Comdg. our brigade I think is getting most as sharp as John Morgan we never go out without brining in some of them and scarcely ever lose a prisner Wilder has invented a thing to tear up rail road track and twist and spoil the iron

it is made some how this way                         [picture] /

and hooks under the rail and then we take our hatchets and cut a lever and get a pry in it across the rail with a rope at the top of the pole 6 of us can jerk the iron right up

I think we will start on a wild goose chase before long.

there is scarcely any crop planted in Tennessee this year at all

we have very nice weather here this spring

water call has just sounded and I must close for this time by subscribeing myself

            Your Affct Son
