Camp 30 miles from Chatanooga
August 27th 1863
 
Dear Father
                        I take the present opportunity to inform you I am well at present and hope these few lines may find you all in good health I started from Louisville last Saturday and came to Stevenson on the cars and had to walk and ride on wagons 44 miles and found the brigade train camped in squachey valey and all the boys 30 miles over the mountain opposite Chatanooga and get their grub over the mountain on pack mules I am going to stay here with the train untill they come back or the train goes to them
 
I found my portfolio and about 2 dollars worth of paper and envelops wet and spoiled but I will use the paper any way
 
Our army is on one side of river and the rebs on the dont know / whether they will make much of a fight or not they say our boys are practiceing with their spencers across the river at chatanooga 700 yards I hope I will be with them in a few days
 
write soon and direct to the regt as usual. Give my love to Mother Lina and rachel
