George W. Young to Amaziah Young, 27 August 1861
Cheat Mountain pass Aug 27th

Dear Father
I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well and hope these few lines may find you all in good helth I have not been very well for a few days back but I have got all right again and can exclaim in the sublime languge of a man who has breakfasted on sea biscuit who wouldent be a soldier.

we have had very nice wether for a few days but it has began to rain again this morning and there is no telling when it will quit there is 9 regiments in this camp and vicinity and I believe we are going to have a fight before long and I wish we would for the bloody 17 is getting tired of doing the work / and letting the rest do the fighting but it will come our turn after a while if the would let us cross right over into Mcdowels Command we could clean them out in a few days I am in hopes they send us to Missouri for I am afraid there is no fighting in virginia for us I and Mose has been sitting in a wagon all day talking over the matter and we come to the conclusion we would have the business done up in ten months and then we would come and pay you all a you a visit I would not mind soldiering at all if it was not for getting sick it makes a fellow so devilish home sick but I suppose a person will get used to it but I take notice a couple of our boys died a getting used to it but I think I will / sand the shower a while longer
