Cheat Mountain Pass A 30th 1861
 
Dear Sister
                        I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well and hope these few lines may find you in good health we are still at cheat mountain though our company is camped two miles out guarding a brige and we have a good time eating roasting ears and blackberries I want you to write and let me know how often you go to meeting. I want you to go around as much as you can and be good to Lina and let her go with you as often as you can and tell Mother I think I am as good a boy as I used to be if not better I want you form a lasting acquaintance and friendship and I dont think / you ever will regret it for she is a nice girl if there ever was one I have got one letter from Margery and one from F. J. Morrow and two from Jane Robinson and John, but you need not say nothing about it I want you to keep the good side of Will if you can for I believe you are he is a first rate fellow and it would be funny if you cut out Alice jane Blair if you get acquainted with Kate you must not forget to speak a good word for me I want you to give my love aunt liss and all of our little cousins I must quit for the present and dont forget to write twice a week. no more at present but remain your Affectionate Brother
