Benjamin H. Mace was born on October 13, 1823, in Farmington, Maine. He married Frances Laughton around 1855, and they had at least four children: Marion, born around 1857; Arthur, born around 1861; Lewis, born around 1871; and Jennie, born around 1875. Frances was a highly-educated woman who began writing poetry as a child and eventually published Legends, Lyrics and Sonnets (1883) and Under Pine and Palm (1888). The family lived in Bangor, Maine, and Mace worked as a lawyer. In 1860, Mace owned $8,000 of real estate and $400 of personal property. He died on December 14, 1901.
