George W. Weston to Emelia M. Weston, 25 October 1862
Letter #9
St Louis Oct 25th 62

My dear Emelia
We came on board the boat Imperial yesterday but there was so much freight to take on for the regiment that we shall not leave before this afternoon. We have on board 100 cattle 150 mules wagons tents and every thing in fact that we need for the Regiment. We shall leave our old guns here and get Enfield rifles It has been quite cold here and this morning the ground was covered with snow I felt bad to see it for fear it would trouble you, but I hope you will get along well / and not be troubled. I hope Mr Campbell will be with you this winter. I want to keep the colts and calves if you can for I hope we may get through in a year.

I spoke to Mr Nicholas about some lumber for you and he said you could have all you wished. I am not to find any more lumber for the fence betwen Mrs Millard and you. there is nearley enough there and she must find the rest and build half the fence and find half the posts. you need not trouble about it but I hope Richard will build it and finish the fence betwen the lots I wrote you yesterday but thought I would write a line today I / dont know as I shall be able to mail this here but will send it the first chance.

Mr Campbell and wife gave me a gold dollar and brought me down a good supper the night we left Clinton and I shall never forget my that supper. Hat and Oliver came down to see me but they did not think to bring me any thing though Oliver bought me a pair of suspenders for he heard me say I had forgoten to get me some. I have just ate the last of the cookies you sent me they wer real good. I hope you will get the County bounty for I dont know when we shall get our pay but I will send it to you as soon as I get it. You must look out for / your buck wheat corn potatoes flax seed &c from the farm and there may be some beens there. Ask Richard how much flax seed to feed the colts. they will not need much. I have tryed to find Mr Oliver but could not. Tell Ralph to be a good boy and kiss him for father. I wish I could see you all. I hope the baby is better. write as often as you can direct in care of Capt. Johnson. Potatoes are worth 80 and 90 cents per bushel here so I think you will get something for yours. Give my fondest regards to all God bless you my dear wife

your own true
George
