George W. Weston to Emelia M. Weston, 5 June 1863
Walnut Hills June 5th 1863

My Dear wife Emelia
I must write you a line though I have not much to say but if I could see you I could talk till you would be tiered We got a mail the 3d but no letter for me I was disappointed but I shall get it sometime I hope. Things are prety quiet here on both sides though you might think there was some noise as we have some sharp shooting and our Artilery give them a dose now and then. the Rebs do not reply much we think they are short of amunition but it is hard to tell. I think though they are in a prety bad fix and must give up soon. We are planting heavy guns and geting ready for them on all sides. I dont think there will be any more chargeing, at least I hope not but it will be taken by seige, and I think it will be a short seige to when every thing is ready. I now have command of Co H of Dewitt the officers are all sick or wounded and the Col. ordered me to take command, but it will onley be for a short time I hope though I live / with Co C the same as before. We have got a large box packed to send and I am going to send it directley to you, and if you have to pay any freight you must charge enough on what others send so that your share will not cost you to much, but make it as equal as you can for all. The packages for Clinton you can send or take to McDaniels and I guess he will pay you the freight and collect it when he delivers the packages. There are 2 coats for Vanepps which you can send when you get a chance to John Willet There is 1 package directed to Myrond Colins Bellevue you can send or take it to Lunts and he will send it up on a boat. he will pay you the freight. I will send you a list of things that belong to you I may not get in every little thing but any thing that you find that is not marked belongs to you. if the mark gets of of any thing of any value let me know and I will write who it belongs to. let me know how much the freight is and how much you paid for your share. You will find in one of the vest pockets of mine a silver pencil and gold pen that belongs to Hunt you can send it to his folks. I dont know when the box will start. you may not get it for a long time and perhaps never but I hope you will. Give something to the children and all the rest belongs to / you and I when I get home. The best coat and the vests fit me very well. you will find in my old soldier coat (It is the one I drew in Camp Kirkwood) pocket a little confectionary give it to the children and kiss them for me. Daniel is well and sends much love to his wife how does she get along. you must have as much charity for her as you can, for slavery has made her what she is. I will put in the list of articles and then I must close. God bless you my dear Wife. Dont mention a word about it to any one but pray for the time to come speediley and that I may get through safeley but I am going home if I live just as soon as I can get the chance after Vicksburg is taken but remember dont say a word for they will hear of it here and I shall fail
