Low Moor June 14, 1863
My own dear George,
Your last letter was not dated but must have been written May last or June first. it was in answer to five letters of mine the last dated May 19. it was just 3 weeks from the time I wrote till I got the answer, which was very quick. I sent your things by Henry. am in hopes you will get them soon & that all will please you. I wrote a line and put in with them. hope you will get them all right. Lizzie left Lyons Friday morn for John is most to Memphis if she has had good luck she is a brave & good girl Sammy is improveing fast. think he will get well now.
I sent the last letter Mr C wrote to you so you have his address. I get along midling well with Elisa. last night / though she gave me a blowing up it is the first time she has tried to show her authority. she wont do it many times for I shant be sauced by her but she can help me a great deal if she is a mind to. I told her I would allow her 95cts a week. I dont know but you will think it to much. she is worth that to me, if she dose as well as she can. I let her go to Mr Wallaces 1 day & to Mr Hinmans 3 days last week she is going to Mr Wallaces again this week. Mrs Wallace has a cancer comeing on the brest. she is treating it, thats why she wants help.
she can get chances to work all the time that I dont want her so she can earn more than I can pay. I shall save her bord though that is not much as she is not a great eater. Becky gets along / very well but has to have a stubborn tantrum once in a while
You want to know if Rich has finished the barn the cupola & some other things are not done & wont be if I have to ask him to do it. I have no lumber to be use but when he tells me he is ready to do it I will get it not before. Campbell got him to cut the slides just before he left but it provoked him when he asked him.
I can live by him well enough if I nothing to do with him, no other way I thought you would like th change of haveing Vanantwerp go. You will be able to save most of your wages for the present I hope if you get the things I sent. I am in hope you will be paid before long so that I may settle with Oliver. I shall do it as soon as I get the money. I have 16. dol in bounty no one will take it at less than 10 per cent dis. & I hate to let / it go so I am doing without some things now in hopes I shall not have to sacrifice so much.
Schuyler got a letter from Sam Davis he is Capt. in 14 Connetticut, is with Hooker
Wendell improves in walking, walks more or less every day he was 2 years old last Friday the 12. we have not had any bad weather till within the last three days it has been very warm & no rain for two weeks. things begin to suffer for it I am quite well. if you could only be here I should be all right I hope you can come soon. I hope I may get a letter to morrow dont forget to date your letters again. my flowers are not doing very well for want of rain.
I will write no more to day.
Monday
Elisa has got done washing & gone to the station of on erand so I will write till she comes back then we have got to put up a bach. I have not made soap yet. to day Dr Brown came to see if I would sell our little corn plow. I let him have it for 5 dol. a new one can be got for 6. so I thought it was fair what do you think of it? Saturday news came of the / battle of Milikens bend, also a rumor that John Haskell was dead
I hope its not true. I begin to be hopeful about Vicksburg think we shal carry the day if what I hear is true. it troubles me for fear Johnston will attack you in the rear, then you will have to fight more. is it very much warmer with you than here I think of you much this hot weather. Poor fellow I hope you can come home soon where you can take some comfort of your life. there can not be much where you are. Old Gleason & wife & Abel are having trouble. she will probably leave him is going to slow about it.
