Low Moor July 19, 1863

My own dearest George,
Your kind letters of July 2 & 4th came to hand last week I need not say that I was glad to get them for you know that. one of them contained your picture you think you have not changed much. I asked Ralph who it was. he looked at it for a time & then said he did not know. I asked if it want papa. he said no & to tell the truth I should not have known it under some circumstances. you never have been so poor since we were married & I fear from the looks of your eyes that you are troubled with diareah. if it so you must take care of your self. be careful what you eat, get what fruit you can bathe yourself & use soap rubbing well & take one or two warm injections to after / that cool ones.

John Haskell is doing well. when I see him shall tell him you have written to him I think you are a little blue from the tone of yours of the 2d I hope you feel more encouraged now it seems we have accomplished something on the Miss. whether it will amount to any thing is yet to be seen.

I miss Mr Campbell and often wish they would have remained in Clinton but do not allow myself to think about it much. I am glad you have written to Charles Powers. I have not written for a long time. really I do not feel like writing to any one but you.

The stock are doing well. the strawbery has not had a calf. she is growing finely is very pretty. I am so glad the butter was good & you enjoyed it so much

You want I should learn Wendell to say papa. I shall not have to do it / as he has said it for a long time he says "papa come". he loves Charly Millard very much. when he goes from here after playing with him a while, he says "Curley gone G[?]" he says "he's good boy, Curly" he means his hair is curly. I cant tell all he says for he talks a great deal.

Yours of the 4th was about the same that was in the papers but worth more to me, because from you. I am anxious to know where you have gone, one report says to join Shermans force to close Johnson. another to build railroad I should rather it would be the latter as I do not think it would be as hard on you. I do not think you are fit to march how I wish you could have got home for a time. it would have done you so much good & you need recruiting. I took Elisa & the children & went to Clinton Friday, came back yesterday. Elisa got her picture for Daniel. I shall put it in this. you will give it to him.

I went to see Honie (Miss Earhart) & had the good luck to see Miss Spooner to. she says Sage is sick. I hope he will get well. is he dangerous & what ails him & Hoodly to why did'nt you tell about them. I wrote you rather a sad story about Johnson & his affairs, from a report last week. I must say I was affraid it was true, but have changed my mind now. at any rate he & Honie are on good terms, although they are in have had some warm talk & almost everyone in Clinton says they have seen him drunk. he has gone to N.Y. comes back this week & starts for the Regt next week. I have got some towels to send by him & will send some other things if he can take them I look for them up here Friday eve. Honie is comeing to spend a week when her vacation is.

Tell Sage he can have one thing to comfort him, that Miss Spooner is true as the Sun & she loves him I can feel it Johnson wants to be married before he returns but she will not. she owned it me what I told you that she did not love him but had more respect for him than any man she ever knew. if he dose as he can she will love him I think. for his own sake I hope he may for he loves her & it will ruin him to have her leave him I have a curiosity to have you keep an eye on him & from time to time let me know how he conducts himself.
