Charles H. Powers to Emelia M. Weston, 29 August 1863
East Jaffny Augt 29, 1863

Dear Cousin
I this afternoon recd a paper from you conveying the sad inteligence of the death of George. The news came upon me with feelings of the deepest sadness for there was no one of my friends who I esteemed more highly than George. Emelia your loss is a heavy one for a better & truer man never lived in N.H. than Geo. Weston. I feel to sympathise with you and it make my heart bleed to thibnk that you and your little children are left alone. May God guard & bless you all. Are you taking any measures to settle your affairs. I think if you can you had better settle up & come on here to live. Have you any one to assist you. When Geo. wrote to me last fall after he enlisted he wrote me that if he should lose his life to "take good care of Emelia and the little ones" he says "I know you will do it Charles". And now Emelia if I can be of any service to you let me know what I can do for you at once and I will endeavor to do it. I hope you will be careful / who you employ to do business, for you out there do mot employ any one unless you know them to be honest. There are many lawyers who offer to obtain pensions &c for widows who will take every advantage they can to make money for themselves. Write me at once just how you are situated and how your affairs are &c &c.

I recd a letter from Geo. dated the 27th June at Vicksburg in which he told me he had stood the hardships well. I wrote to him at Vicksburg but presume he never recd my letter.

Please write to me at once and write how your affairs are &c. &c.

Yours
C. H. Powers
