Low Moor P.O. Clinton Co Iowa Nov. 15th, 67.
C. B. Campbell
Dear Friend, I thought I would wait till after the sale before writing you, & now I have only time to say a few words. The sale passed of very satisfactory & sold for more than inventoried at. It over run 400.00/100. I have only received little over 100.00 yet & I enclose 100.00 in this letter for which you will please send me a receipt. Messer bought more than enough to pay him the 50.00 he let you have. I tried to sell your sleigh. Some man bid 15.00 on it to start it & then could not be found so it was not sold. I will take it to Gleasons as soon as I have a chance. J. Haskell bought all the horses for 161.00 & I expect I shall have some trouble in getting the money.
In regard to your question about boarding the boys, I think you should decide that for your self. If I was going to guess at the probable value of boarding the boys in your place I would say 600 & that would / include keeping their clothes in repair but not making them. I think I should buy their clothing ready made. I spoke to Messer about it, he said he had received a letter from you & would answer soon & give you his views on that subject. Messer & Judge Young were talking about your giving bond & they both seem to think you should in N.Y.
The judge promised me a written statement of the law in regard to that point but he has not done it yet. When he does I will send you a coppy.
I find I have to go through a great deal of formality most enough to make me sick but shall do the best I can. We have decided to sell the house & lot in Low Moor & the farm as soon as possible the other land not to hurry so much about. We will send the boys things to you in a few days now they are nearly all packed. Tell the boys I love them & hope they will be good boys & mind Mr Campbell & always speak the truth & learn as fast as possible, then they will make good & respected men. I will write you again soon,
Very Truly Yours,
B. R. Palmer
P.S. We have not had a stormy day since you left
