Emelia M. Weston to Cornelius B. Campbell and Phebe Campbell, 24 September 1863
Low Moor Sept 24th 1863

Mr & Mrs Campbell,
Dear Friends.
Yours of the 19th came to hand this morn. The babies are abed & sleep, Strof. ( a contraband) sits by the table mending your old over coat. I gave it to him this morning & told him he might have your old over shoes also. am I not makeing a good use of your old clothes?

I am trying to adopt your plan "to think receive suggestions & act as circumstances seem to dictate" it seems to be my best way.

I have employed Tyrell of Clinton to do my military business for me also consulted him about the will. he said "let it be for the present or till a new Judge comes in to office which will be in Jan. & it would / not cost me anything. If I got it done now it would cost from 20. to 30. dollars to go on & do my business just as I pleased". I asked him what his charges would be, he said "nothing but the postage & what was paid out." It is through Johnson (he is very kind) he dose so. I dont know whether Johnson settles the bill or not & dont care so long as it is all done straight. I have been decided all the time that it was not best to make an auction but Hinman Wagner & some thought otherwise. I shall sell things of as fast as I can for a fair price, till all is sold. then go East. shall stop at Vineland & stay as long as I feel contented You can be looking for me in the course of a couple of years. I sold the waggon that's at Clinton for 50. dol. am trying to sell the stock now so as not to have it to take care of this winter. The coalt / is better, begins to get fat, think it will get well.

I have $100.00 due me next week. if I get it all right shall send you all that I owe you. I do not like to have it by me so of course had rather use it to pay debts. if nothing happens shall send it the last of next week or first of week after. I hope you will get this before you hire any. I have been in Clinton once but did not have time to make inquiries. will the next time I go.

I am going to have some pictures taken of George & you shall have another then

I sent to Mrs Stillman for one she had & could you believe it she had one taken from it & sent me the copy I shall send again soon.

I shall not get a stone for George if I take him East. I hardly think I shall do so. I wish I could know how I would feel if I do not. I feel now if I take his body I have / not got him he is gone. it seemed so to me as soon as he breathed his last & then I have a dread of disturbing it.

I like your suggestions about lettering the stone but have not fully decided on any thing as there need be no hurry. any thing you have to say about it or any thing else I shall hear gladly. You can advise full as well as any one for you know how I am situated. How I would like to see you & I would like to have you here to now

Wagner is threashing & I need someone to look after my share but I will not wory. The Stillman affair is all rather disgusting to me. he is trying for a divorce she wrote me so & he was going to take all her children from her. Mrs Jones & Miss B left for NY last Monday. Lizzie H. is going to open a shop in Lyons so as to make a home for Sammy. Palmers & Wallaces are well. to day the sad news of Billie Gulic death came. he died the 3d he was wounded in the leg the 27 of Aug at the battle of Bayou [?] it was amputated above the knee but mortification took place soon after I know not whether Goreham is safe or not. I must close or I cannot send tonight.

with much love I remain your friend
E. M. Weston
