Daniel Sweetland
Daniel Sweetland was born around 1821 in New York. He moved to Huron County, Ohio, by he early 1840s, and he married Orphelia E. Crosby there on September 21, 1841. They had at least six children: Andrew, born around 1842; Julia, born around 1843; Malina, born around 1845; Ella, born around 1847; Frank, born around 1852; and Fanny, born around 1852. The family lived in Richmond, Ohio, and Sweetland worked as a farmer. He owned $1,200 of real estate in 1850, and a decade later, he owned $2,000 of real estate and $800 of personal property. He enlisted in the Union army on November 10, 1861, and mustered in as a corporal in Company I of the 55th Ohio Infantry later that day. He took part in the Battle of Cedar Mountain and the Battle of Chancellorsville, and he was promoted to sergeant on May 10, 1863. He apparently suffered an injury or illness that year, and he was transferred to the 14th Veteran Reserve Corps on July 15, 1863.

Sweetland returned to Richmond, Ohio, after the war. He applied for a federal pension in May 1867 and secured one soon afterward. By 1870, he owned $2,800 of real estate and $800 of personal property. His wife Orphelia died around 1897, and Sweetland eventually moved into his son Frank’s house in Greenfield, Ohio. He died on August 1, 1900.
