James A. Garfield to Schuyler W. Colfax, 13 May 1865
Sherman House,
Chicago, May 13 1865

My Dear Colfax
Your kind letter of the 6th came duly to hand, and also the Tribune containing your beautiful tribute to our dead President. Its praises are in every mouth here. It shows your great heart in every sentence. Bless you for it. Gov. Bross has called on me and thinks room can be made for me. I told him I feared I would crowd you all. But I write to say that I am ex- / ceedingly fearful that even if your generous arrangement can be made I shall not be able to go so soon. Iam involved in a heavy business enterprise which I expected to close by day after tomorrow—but I fear it will hold me a week longer. There is a gooddeal of gain or loss to me involved in its success & I must not lose. I will see Gov Bross again soon & try not to make you any trouble I can hardly tell you how much I want to go with you. Let me tell you my dear Schuyler that / since our first meeting you have grown on me, till I feel more like a lover than a friend toward you Let me hear from you & know what your latest programme is.

Ever Your Bro
                        James A Garfield

P.S.
Love to your mother
