Henry V. Stewart
Henry V. Stewart was born around 1841 in Pennsylvania to William and Mary Stewart. His father was a farmer and teacher who owned $800 of real estate and $350 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in East Mahoning, Pennsylvania, and by 1860, he was working as a farm laborer.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on August 21, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company A of the 61st Pennsylvania Infantry the following day. According to his service records, he was 6 feet tall, with black hair and blue eyes. The regiment took part in the Peninsula campaign, the Seven Days’ Battles, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign.
 
He was wounded in May 1862. Confederate forces captured him during the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863, but he was eventually exchanged, and he rejoined the regiment. He was killed in the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864.
