this diary will show to you by reading and looking it over the hardships and trials which I have bin through for the past year 1863 I have made some mistakes in dateing it and in days of week &c but as a gen thing it is as correct account of my journey and what I have bin through as you will genl find owing
191
to the circumstances that I have had in getting it up. But as I have said in my letters to you if I should live to be an old man I never shall forget 1863 and if I should live to come home and enjoy the comforts of a sweet home and life I should perhaps want to recall my times on this book back to some of those hardships and awful scens. yes scens and sounds of Battle where my brave and dearing
192
Comrads fell by my side. Oh how was it at Antietam at Fredericks Burg Chancelors Ville and GettysBurg. how did the sound of Battle appear to my ears at Antietam on the commencment of the fight I feared nuthing nor cared for nuthing untill Ephraim Green fell by my right side pierced through by a ball from the Enamys gun. Oh how quick was I struck with the thought from a friend and then to see my other friends
193
John Orr shot on Picket and Norman Foster & from our Co it looked hard on the 19th the last guns wer fired and the Enamy was on the retreat. But oh it was hard to leave the 2 best friends behind me but now they ly slumbering in the toomb was killed on the 17th & 18th of Sept. 1862.
My next engagement was at Fredericks Burg on the 13th day of December. how did the sound of Battle appear to my ears then it sounded as though the whole
194
Heavens had opend upon the earthly and that the Rebelion would be crushed in less than 24 hours. A dreadful day was that to me I was wounded slightly by a shell from the Enamys Artillery but not to lay me up onley about 2 weeks
Our Cos loss one Lieut killed Andrw Galigar wounded Chancey Sanders wounded and but such a scene of Battle cannot be emaginable to those that do not see & hear it. next was at Chanceloreville
195
the result of that awful battle was this that we in the end got drove. But we lay in our breastworks and threw our amunition away at them as we would at birds we drove them 3 lines of Battle back and repulsed them in every front on the left but when our right gave way we wer compelled to fall back loosing many of our comrads but none from our Co. this was done on the 3d day of May 1863 if I remember right we fell back across the river
196
My next was at GettysBurg Penn on the 2ond day of July 1863 how did the sound of Battle appear to my ears their wy it appeared we drove the Rebs about a ½ a mile and was compelled to fall back and take our own posision as we belonged at first tho we left many of our brave comrads behind Wilbur Kemp taken prisenor but good luck has brought his safe return. but I am sorry we
197
are compelled to fight and loose our friends in such a cruel war, altho we know this war is a breaking out of Rebellion that must be crushed, altho if I live to see another year roll round I call on uncle Abe for my discharge and return to a home once more. Dear Parents I shall send this to you asking you to keep it in rememberenc of me and looking for my safe return home. Signed Sergeant Ephraim E. Brown
