Unity Cooper (maiden name: Patrick) was born on January 21, 1825, in Georgia to John H. Patrick and Nancy Mitchell. Her father was a farmer who owned $30,000 of real estate in 1850, including at least 12 enslaved laborers. She grew up in Franklin County, Georgia, and she married Temple Franklin Cooper there on November 3, 1841. They had at least five children: Lafayette, born around 1842; Florida, born around 1844; Buena Vista, born around 1846; William, born around 1848; and Joseph, born around 1849. The family owned $6,800 of real estate in 1850. A decade later, they owned $5,000 of real estate and $15,000 of personal property. Her husband died on February 2, 1864. By 1870, she was living with her daughter Buena Vista’s family in Atlanta, Georgia. Buena Vista moved to Cartersville, Georgia, sometime before 1880, and Unity accompanied her. She applied for a Confederate widow’s pension in 1891. She apparently returned to Franklin County in the 1890s, and she died there on May 18, 1896.
