I have neglected keeping my track of things for sometime but there has been very little of any importance going on we have been twice Reviewed once by Genl Wright & once by Genl Meade. we have had a good deal of rain but for the last two weeks it has been quite pleasent for the last few days it has been very dusty but today it is pleasent again

We have been having Batallion & Company Drills when the weather permitted the Rebs have been quite in our front

Pleasent day a little chilly cold night
there has been a gooddeal of heavy firing on our left wing this night & morning. Ordered to pack up pull down tents & went to the Fort about 8 oclock stayed there all day the picket line was reinforced & a charge made on the

Rebs about noon but we failed to drive them then the whole Division was sent out & drove them out in front of our Brigade at half past three oclock PM taken a good many prisinors our company went out to reserve on the Picket line after dark Stayed all night no firing on the lines after dark

Rebs commenced firing as soon as daylight on the line about 10 oclock we moved to the left of the Picket line & stayed all day & night

Rebs made a charge on the Second Division just before daylight & kept it up all fornoon but could not break the lines Releived off Picket morning

Called up before four oclock went to the Fort & stayed till after daylight on camp gaurd all quite on the lines sent for my overcoat expecting to move

Started from camp at 2 AM went out to the left & formed in line of Battle Charged the Rebs works at daybreak entered them without much trouble drove them back taking a large amount of guns & prisinors

Packed up & moved out at 8 AM moved off to the left marched all day camped in the wood before sundown for the night
the Rebs left Petersburg & all the works around it early this morning Richmond reported evacuated

Moved out at 6 AM marched till 9 laid still till near noon moved again & marched till after dark & camped for the night roads bad hard getting along Pleasent day

Called up & moved at 3 AM Stopped for breakfast at 8 marched hard all day stopped for the night at sundown threw up breastworks

Moved out at 7 AM went out in the woods & round 5 or 6 miles come back & started on ahead marched till 4 PM came on to the Rebs & had a sharp fight A great many Rebs killed & wounded & a great many captured our loss small moved about 2 miles farther & camped for the night

Started at 7 AM marched about 3 miles & stopped to draw rations moved again at one oclock & marched hard till after dark & camped for the night at New Store

Called up at 4 AM & got ready to move marched at 7 Stopped from 10 to 11 & marched again till 4 & went into camp got the news that Lee had surrendered to Grant great rejoicing Salutes fired & the officers made speeches to the men
