Virginius Newton
Virginius Newton was born on October 27, 1844, in Virginia to Cincinnatus and Martha Newton. His father was a lawyer who owned $40,000 of real estate and $37,000 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Norfolk, Virginia, and he served as a midshipman in the Confederate navy. He served aboard the CSS Virginia during the Battle of Hampton Roads. 
 
He returned to Norfolk after the war, and he attended the University of Virginia in the late 1860s. By 1870, he was working as a lawyer in Norfolk. He eventually moved to Richmond, Virginia, and he served as president of the city’s First National Bank. He married Mary Barksdale on September 25, 1900. He died in Richmond on May 26, 1901.
