Amos J. Connell was born around 1808 in Maryland to James Connell and Elizabeth Myers. His family moved to Ohio sometime in the 1810s, and his father died there around 1821. He married Nancy Hestand in Columbiana County, Ohio, on September 16, 1827, and they had at least twelve children: Joseph, born around 1828; Sarah, born around 1830; Benjamin, born around 1832; Isaac, born around 1834; Maria, born around 1836; David, born around 1838; Levi, born around 1840; Elizabeth, born around 1842; Hiram, born around 1844; Amos, born around 1846; Anna, born around 1848; and Clementine, born around 1852. Connell worked as a farmer, and by 1860, he owned $5,400 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property. His wife Nancy died on May 24, 1860, and he married Sarah H. Quinter on December 24, 1863. In 1870, he reported owning $6,000 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property. He remained in Columbiana County for the rest of his life, and he died there on June 20, 1889.
