Quite cold & windy all day. Snow fell last night to the depth of 2 inches. The coldest night of the season so far. Mail driven from East behind time. train did not get in from Memphis until near 4 PM bro't me a letter from Anna & the news that Kate was sick. big scare in Memphis every body there afraid Forrest is going to attack the city. Whicher our sutler & Jno McCormick orderly of Co E. went to Memphis on business. Our cook Patsy quite sick all day

Cold & raw all day, but not quite as cold as was yesterday. finished letter to Anna in morning received a letter from Anna in PM comd an answer to it in the evening, some warmer in the afternoon got cloudy & looked like storm

Cool but much warmer than yesterday. Commenced storming in morning sleet & snow fell most of day. sent letter to Anna. Patsys sister came to cook for us until Patsy gets well. Received a letter from Anna & one from Emma in PM. No 27 from Anna wrote to Em L Snyder in evening

cool but sleety & rainy most of day. sent letter to Em Snyder in morning mail wrote to Anna. Got picture of Color Guard for $1.00 & sent to her. I did not pay for it sent picture to her learned we had been transferred to the 16 AC Gen Hurlbut Upham our Sgt Major recd telegram to report to Adjt Gen Harris Memphis for special duty. he is to go with the Gov't printing office

Cold & windy, wind in No West all day Whicher came from Memphis with goods for party & for his store. we took them to Carsons for his wife to cook with pies & cakes &c Recd letter from Anna written Christmas morning I bot McKelroys over coat am to pay him $25. when I get my Feb pay. Col came from Memphis & stopped with us over night He says we are surely transferred to 16 Corps. He has got leave of absence & starts home tomorrow.

Very cold & windy but clear all day. last night the coldest night of the season. Had a large party in afternoon & night over 80 took supper. had a very pleasant time. danced in back rooms Players in the Hall. danced until 2½ AM. got acquainted with a number of Ladies Col Hill went away on train

Very cold for the country. did not sleep but two hours last night. all the party goers went home before morning but the Miss B[?]s, they stayed to breakfast. Wrote to Anna in afternoon Major John is to go to Pocahontas to take command whilst the Col is gone home. Spencer & Ed Kamseling went to Memphis

Cold night last night clear to day & some warmer. Borrowed five dolls from Dixson & twenty from Kennedy to pay up my little debts. Major John went to Pocahontas. I went with him got a picture taken in case to send to Anna looked about the town & came back on foot & alone. saw sand squirrels but did not shoot at them comcd a letter to Anna in the evening

Cool but very pleasant all day. Burmeister came down & took command of Det. had dress parade in PM Spencer & Kamseling came from Memphis 2 Battalions of the 4th East Tenn Cavalry came from Corinth in the cars camped in the timber north of town outside the lines. Bot suspenders of Whicher $1.25

Cool in morning but much warmer in PM Troops came in all night & all day. a Brigade came in all supposed to be going to Holly Springs after Forrest. recd detail ordering me to Pocahontas as Regimental Adjutant. went up on train with McKelroy & Bayley. Recd two letters one from Anna & one from Uncle Elton. went to the [faded] stay all night on extra train. Got there by 9 PM

Cool, cloudy & frosty looked like snow. Cavalry left for the south in early morning went to Pocahontas on PM train borrowed $10 of J. C. Gruwell. Hoover went to Memphis with refugees, worked at rolls &c all day. bot paper of mail boy. Cleared off very pleasant & warm

Clear & very pleasant over head all day, but warm enough to make it very muddy. Went to Middleton & packed my bed clothes & took them to Spencers tent, walked back with Prosser big scare at night, Company comdr ordered to have roll call & be ready for falling in at a moments notice. Rained a little in night with quite a high wind, soon changed to No West before morning & weather turned colder

Bagley working on a box for me to carry my clothes & papers in in place of my valise 2 men captured by Guerrillas from Co G at Middleton in night. they were out of the lines visiting some girls. two were wounded one escaped making 3 in all

Cold in AM warm & clear in PM. Scout reports 13 Brigades of the enemy at Ripley & more scattered all over the country. Ayres, Allen & Comstock came up with Phillips on foot from Middleton. John came up on train & left his watch to be repaired. went back with them. Got letter, No 31. from Anna wrote to her in PM
Sunday, January 17, 1864.
Cloudy all day. Comcd raining after noon rained most of day & night. Major John came back from La Grange wrote to Anna, No 41. Chaplain's wife & children came from Iowa. Lofland also came. Right wing went to within ¾ mile of Middleton on scout, rained powerfully all night, very dark mud very deep & the march cold we had the worst time since we have been in the service. some fell in the creek but we got out alive, found no Rebs & got back to qrs. at 5 AM I did not sit down from the time we left here until we returned.

Cold & freezing all the time this day did not get up until 9 AM felt bad all day. lame & sore. Inspection came off at 2 PM. snowed quite hard all the PM made good appearance on inspection the Reg'mt did

Clear & cold in AM but warm & pleasant in PM & very muddy. Creitz got back from Memphis, reports boats ready for us to go down the river on. He bro't me a brass padlock for my new chest, 50¢, I paid Lt Clark 2.00 for my board for one week. 7th Kansas passed towards Memphis. Brass Band along. played here before train left. Recd letter from Anna No 34, wrote to her.

Thursday, January 21, 1864.
Clear & warm all day. was taken very sick in morning with pneumonia bad swelling in my left side & so much pain that I could scarcely breathe. got some medicine & a mustard plaster on me. got better fast & felt pretty well before night. Got marching orders to go as soon as Corinth is evacuated, 3rd Illinois Cav left in night for Memphis our orders are for Memphis for the present. McKelroy & McCormick up from Middleton stayed all night.

worked all day at reports very fine day, warm & pleasant. got an old letter from Anna, date of Dec 17th. Jas Gruwell came up from Middleton. John Mares came to Co. today. all well in Iowa when he left. I comd long letter to Anna enclosed our orders & move where, got violin & guitar in evening & had a fine time playing. there were two dances outside the lines, did not go.

Warm & very pleasant all day. walked to Middleton with Gruwell Mares & another man. found all well, man stole silk dress & some other things from a woman outside the lines. he was having his trial when I came away, took dinner with John. came back on an extra train, no Passenger train running

Warm & very pleasant all day. Battery had drill & Inspection in AM. Large mail came in. I got a letter from Anna & from Amy. wrote to Anna No 44 in evening. Terry went to La Grange on business on train in evening. Chaplain preached in morning at 10 AM. Troops moving nearly all night

Warmest day of the month so far. boys around in their shirt sleeves all day. Co F went out to tannery & destroyed it. Forces moving all day Parsons & Ward up to see me in PM. got marching orders to be ready at a moments notice to embark on the cars Battery men blew up the fort. the explosion was terrific & also dug up ground, some of the buildings burned in town during the night wrote to Amy started & went to Middleton sent 8 men at 12 PM got there at 2 AM up all night
Tuesday, January 26, 1864.
Quite warm all day. wind in So. got back from Middleton on train. engineer shot thro the body, died after they got him to Pocahontas. some 150 shots fired into the train. struck tents and took the cars at 9 PM. Burned all the buildings in Pocahontas nearly. stopped until 12 PM far left wing at Middleton. stuck on the grade west of there engine took half the train & went on. came after other half just at sunrise. did not sleep any all night

Clear & very pleasant all day. started about sunrise & got into Memphis by 3 PM & as soon as off the cars marched down to the wharf & got on board the "Emma Boyd". Steamer came from Cairo, lots of troops going down the river wrote some & went to bed Heard some officer would get the chance to go to Iowa for recruits applied for the chance

Warm & pleasant all day. Reach [?] Landing at 9 AM 10 miles below Fort Pillow, made the latter port about noon stopped to wood above about 5 miles, took on cotton at Hales Point & wood about sundown. had very pleasant time in evening on boat lots of music & singing, also music from band belonging to boat. Heavy thunder storm in night cooled the air & made it cold on the boat woman on board with very sick child

Island cars & arrived at Davenport at 6 PM, saw Cd Hill who was on his way to the Reg't, he stopped at the B[?] House I stopped at Pennsylvania House. McCormick telegraphed to his wife at Muscatine

Wind in No West, saw Col Grier in morning, got leave to go home for the week & report next week Wednesday. left on 2 PM train, same very much behind time. got to Wilton at 9 PM Col Hill left for Reg't on evening train I telegraphed to Anna to meet me at Lisbon same cost 6.00 Left at 4 PM for Wilton Junc got there at 8 PM stayed all night at the McIntire house. rest of the boys stayed there too

Warm & pleasant all day. went to Lisbon on 11 AM train. found all well. Mother had gone to Marion. Eagerty told me that Hoag had sent Anna $25 by express the day before I felt quite sick have a very bad cold bathed myself took some medicine & went to bed

Cold & raw all day wind in No West. did not feel any better than yesterday severe headache & bones ached generally. My lungs very sore looked for Anna but she did not come. stayed in house all day. Mrs S[?] called pd her $20 for Merritt (her son) & gave her his picture.

Prayer meeting at Fathers in the evening. got duplicate certificate of Armstrong to show Grier when get to Davenport

Clear most of day & very pleasant. Anna & Kate with Alta & Father went to church in forenoon. Dimmit preached in Lutheran Church. Jno Hines called in PM on his way from Marion to Mechanicsville. did not stay long, Mrs Hetty Hall came in & visited us a while in the afternoon. Goodhue bro't in some honey for my sore throat & cough, did not sleep much last night on account of cough, lungs very sore all day.

Chris Kurtz took Alta & Frank Rood. Will West & wife also went. Mary Gable there. had very pleasant visit. Got home at 10 PM no train all day on account of snow. got socks at store 65¢

Clear & cold but not so cold as yesterday. Wind in So East. went to Mechanicsville in AM. got there at noon. took dinner & tea at Rices. arrived town in PM made certificate for Mrs Keith that Jas Keith died of diarrhea contracted whilst in the army. Anna got letter from Em. enclosing one from Hoag. found all well in Mechanicsville warmer in PM thawing some. Hoag sent only $25, instead of $225.

Warmer than yesterday thawed considerably all day. Horace took me to Marion & back. I lifted note paying $44.30 bal due on $60. got in Mech'sville found that Bond was as good as a deed. Thos Corbett is the lawyer who has charge of the business & comes to town often

Forsyth, got rations &c. & marched on foot at sundown. took dinner at International & wrote to Anna Rained considerably thro night & wind changed & weather much cooler

Clear & pleasant all day "Des Arc" left for Little Rock with part of our squad of recruits. we went up to coal in AM & then dropped down to wharf & left by 11 AM. saw John & bid him goodbye. we left Memphis at 11 AM & got to Helena at 6 PM 90 miles in 7 hours, dropped down below & took on wood. "Des Arc" came in after us. we left her there. wrote to Anna

Convoy of steamers up to "Duvals Bluff" on White River. saw "Des Arc" there for last time. met the "Arago" going up in AM quite warm & looked like rain towards night. made Skipworths Landing by 8 PM. 2 ladies Misses Robb got off here at Wilsons Landing saw boat on fire new gun boat

Warm but cloudy in AM looked like rain got to Memphis by 3 AM saw John & Carson boat left for Cairo at 11 AM wrote to Miles & J Elton in PM & gave letter to clerk board John J Roe in PM rained quite hard in PM & very foggy in night so much so that boat could not run but part of the time. passed Fort Pillow in night stopped for wood in night.

Foggy in morning passed Cassidy's landing at 10 AM met steamer "City of Alton" loaded with recruits went up cut off & passed McDowell's Landing by 2 PM passed steamer Mariner near there, met Steamer Mary E Forsyth at 3½ PM, passed Tiptonville at 5½ PM 30 miles to Island 10. Colder in evening wind changing passed New Madrid at 8 PM. Fired gun at us & bro't us to at Island 10. got there at 9½ PM

Clear but cool all day. left Centralia at 2½ AM got to Decatur to breakfast at 7 AM Got to La Salle at 1½ PM Lt Sloan & boys chgd cars & went to R. Island. I kept on to Division. Rained some in PM at 3 O'clock stopped at the R-Road cutting house got room & stayed all night. no train passes until tomorrow night. wrote to Doc in evening

Wind strong in No West. several freight trains passed this day but none going beyond Fulton. went thro' the town. church held there in several places, went to a barber shop & got shaved & cleaned & came back to a 3 O'clock dinner. Paid 2.00 for my food & lodging whilst staying 2 nights & eating 3 meals.

Clear & very pleasant all day & warmer than yesterday. expected the Lisbon Co of the 13th Iowa in to day on the cars but they did not come I bot a pr gloves for $1.00 at Kurtz's Store. Had a severe headache all day & did not go out much. snow thawing fast in PM

Warm but rather cloudy all day. Soldiers came home on 3 PM train. Citizens got up a dinner for them at Goodrich's. All the folks in town & country out Kept my bed most of the day on account of a severe headache. Father Mother Alta Horace & Kate went to see the soldiers. Anna stayed with me & put a mustard pasty on my neck

Cold & raw all day. Wind in No West all day. Cap Archer visited me & stayed to dinner. looked quite well. went to Mt Vernon to Soldiers Supper in evening at College. Lisbon Co & friends eat with Mt Vernon boys after that they had a promenade & then went home. Anna & I walked home. Horace carried us there. Alta & Archers girl went up with Cap Archer.

Anna cleaned dishes &c. getting ready for keeping house I fixed windows in PM quite a snow storm in night

Fire engine at work in Navy Yard almost all the boats at levee left in evening. went to theatre to house benefit saw the play of the Octoroon. well performed throughout. door was locked at our boarding house & we had to scale the balcony.

Clear & cool wind in No West warm in PM. went to Fort & got Onstott Robbins & Ferguson out & took them to Lodge to stay until Div train goes up river wrote to Anna sending her likeness of Forrest in PM cloudy late in PM & looking like rain. Put letter in office & then went to Park & passed 2 hours or more played Euchre in evening with Lt Sloan & 2 of the boarders.

Cloudy & cold all day wind in No West. passed Ft Pillow about daylight. passed Tiptonville at 1½ PM got to New Madrid at 3½ PM. had to stop & take on some soldiers going to Cairo & some teams passed Island 10 at 4 PM Hickman at 6 ½ PM & Columbus at 9 PM got to Cairo at 12 AM. Did not get off the boat until morning. Teams commenced unloading as soon as we got there.

He bro't me a letter from Anna quite a fracas in the street soldier knocked a citizen down with sling shot & beat him badly, no provocation, soldier got away without being arrested. Rained all night. 8th Iowa came in in PM Sloan & I did not go out of room after supper

Prayer meeting at our house in evening. quite a number there.

Anna went up street shopping. saw N. P. Reynolds in town. Hayzlett down from Mt. Vernon no one there going into 100 days service. I have not heard from Davenport yet.

Nashville is quite a large city with very narrow streets, 151 miles to Chattanooga, passed Murfreesboro battle ground & town in PM. fine & beautiful country. took supper in route all night arriving at Chattanooga at 6 AM Sunday morning full moon & most beautiful scenery saw Lookout Mountain

I got haversack & something to eat for ten days $5.00 did not get away went to Central House & stayed all night. Bishops Minstrels had a concert in a large tent. they serenaded at several places after their show was out

Hot & sultry with some rain in AM got to train & got on board at 7 AM left at 8.30 for Kingston Ga passed Chickamauga battle field at 10 AM got to Ringgold at noon. sun came out hot in afternoon with occasional showers. passed Tunnel Hill & got to Dalton at 1 PM no trains running & had to stay all night. slept with men in empty house. this town was left by the Rebs 10 days since it is a beautiful place naturally they had it very strongly fortified at Tunnel Hill & from there on. Dalton is 54 miles from Chattanooga

Cool in AM Wind No West. some rain in previous night. left Dalton at 1 PM got to Resaca at 2½ PM turned my men over to Capt Whitaker Comdg [?] Camp mailed letter to Anna from this place written at Dalton. got papers arranged & left for Chattanooga at dark travelled all night on top of car in the rain slept none got to Chattanooga just at daylight dusty & raining Resaca is 66 miles from Chattanooga 65 miles to Atlanta Ga

Clear & very pleasant but warm. sent report to Col Grier, also Descriptive Rolls to Comdg Officers of 5th & 13th Iowa Inf. which took me nearly all of forenoon went to transportation Office got ticket for Louisville. Could not get away for no one can go but sick & wounded soldiers. passed plenty of ripe cherries yesterday. corn nearly waist high & wheat will be ready to harvest in two weeks in Georgia & Alabama. wrote to Amy & W Godfrey & mailed the letters.

I got transportation & left for Chicago on 8½ PM train arrived in Indianapolis at 3 AM got room & breakfast at Mason House train not leaving till 11½ AM

Clear & hot until 4 PM when shower came up & it got cooler left camp (after getting up at 3 AM) at 7.40 AM and travelled very slowly all day, stopping nearly every ¼ mile. went into camp at 5½ PM in open field near water, passed many men half buried feet & heads sticking out one man was hung with his clothes they being torn for that purpose. Cavalry skirmishing some with enemy, they took some cattle from us & also an ambulance loaded with colored troops. Made about 14 miles

Man escaped & came in from 114th Ill & 1 from 93rd Ind report no Rebs at Guntown or Pontotoc we are now about 12 miles from there & over 50 from La Grange bot some flour & lard of [?]. left camp at sundown for the front. our Brig camped as pickets within ½ mile of the enemy. fair chance for a fight tomorrow got but 2 hours sleep

Picket firing all night. remained in camp all day & night. got Cal to cook our meals at a house near by. Mans name was Besing a jew. Miss Springs was there who lived near. Cap Spencer sent a letter to his brother in Rebel Army thro them.

Cool & cloudy early in AM Reveille at 2 ½ AM left at 7 AM 2nd Ia Cav had a skirmish with enemy 4 miles out. They entered town as soon as we left & followed us to Tupelo 23 miles where we arrived after dark after repelling 3 attacks on our flanks. loss this day as near as I can find out on their side of 150 killed & wounded our loss must have been much less. I was shot at by sharpshooters the ball just missing my head. a shell also exploded near me scattering the dirt all over us & wounding some men but did not hit me. lay in line of battle all night. Marched 25 miles today.

Clear & hot all day. got up at 2 AM & Regmt stood by arms until daylight. The men allowed to get their breakfasts. Rebs came in in splendid style & attacked us but we repulsed them taking 2 Regts on & killing many more. our loss as near as can be ascertained [faded] over battle field saw lots of dead Rebs [faded] attacked by the enemy in evening. got quite a little fight. whipped them again & sent them off by 7 PM. Jo Briggs wounded in neck [faded] I was struck in shoulder slightly.

Hot & sultry all day. Enemy attacked us in morning. we threw up entrenchments & fought them a while then charged then Jo Owens wounded in thigh Mat Boyles in wrist today in charge. I went into the skirmish line & fired at the Rebs whenever I got the chance estimated loss of Rebs yesterday 2000 our side 250. we left at 1 PM & marched about 5 miles enemy followed closely shelling us all the time & picking up stragglers. camped about 6 PM in timber near creek & a place called Old Town of [?] house we left 47 behind ten seriously wounded to remove.

Clear & very hot all day our Brig in advance today. Cavalry skirmishing some in our front. some cannonading in our rear. crossed a creek & passed thro' small town & camped for a while. The boys got lots of honey, potatoes green corn & the like today [faded] stayed all night finally tho' we expected marching orders all the time. The town was called Ellisville a deserted hamlet. Cavalry had a lively skirmish with Rebs in our rear & our artillery went out [faded] them. Marched about 12 miles today.

Cool & very pleasant in AM hot in PM started at 4 AM our Div in advance. our Brig in rear. country very rough. we passed thro' high hills & deep ravines. got to Hatchie River at 12M passed it & camped for a while on the hills until the Div train came up (at battle ground on 16th on the space of about an acre I counted 27 dead men amongst them 3 Colonels. [?] Nelson & Harris who [?] under Forrest) crossed Hatchie & camped for night a [?] had reports made out up to 18th. marched about 12 miles.

Hot & sultry all day. started at 6 AM our Brig in rear. marched two miles on Ripley Road & then turned off on Holly Springs road. Kept stopping all day very hard marching went into camp at 9 PM after marching 20 miles thro' a heavily wooded country without water all day. very dusty all the time got among the sand hills & pine timber once more distance to La Grange about 20 miles

Clear & hot all day without any breeze. left camp at 6 AM had good nights sleep last night & felt much better. stopped at [blank] River near Salem for an hour. got to Tipps River at 11 AM good water & had a rest. Then marched on until 9 PM when we went into camp one mile from Salem & 16 from La Grange. Marched over 20 miles today. Camped upon a high hill upon an open field. Salem is no town now all the buildings but 2 having been burned.

Po & I came back immediately after so we stayed all night at Worsham House

Clear & hot all day moved tent in AM & Reg moved also onto new line. Then wrote to Anna & Grove, & mailed the letters. Cap McKelroy came into our mess today. I stayed in camp all day. Chaplain preached at sunset & also Chaplain of the 37th preached both gave us good sermons, got marching orders for Collinsville but they were countermanded right away. 100 day men scared by some guerillas & send in for help.

Rained very hard in night. I got very wet & my blankets were all wet through.

Quite hot all day wind in So West left camp at 7 AM & marched 6 miles to Holly Springs by 10 AM. camped by noon on east side of town near R-R depot. I was detailed on picket at 3 PM located posts & got settled down at dark saw 4 Rebs that had reserve post at Mrs Davidsons on Salem Road which town is 15 miles east of this place. slept under the trees & got an invitation to supper & bed & breakfast which upon my having orders not to leave post I declined much against my inclination

Clear & very pleasant most of day. Heavy shower in PM from No West located 4 new posts in PM wrote to Doc & Anna visited at Mrs Davidsons, her daughter Anna played the piano & sang some songs, passed a very pleasant day. got the address & promised to attend to some of their matters in Memphis, left my picture with them. 12th Mo Cavalry which were on picket near us left at 2 PM having got marching orders. I was relieved by Lt Knight at 5 PM (Mrs Evans—Lemon St Mr Bogue)

Hot & sultry all day. dressed & called upon M. Davidson with Lt Sloan. Came back & got lumber & put up shanty to sleep in. 3 trains came in loaded with 3rd Div Gen Mower came also. Spencer & some of the men came. he & Clark & myself went to town stopped at a house & got some water & heard some music where there were several young ladies. Rained very hard in night & I got myself & clothes wet got marching orders for 5 AM tomorrow morning.

Clear in AM but foggy in the river bottom relieved from train guard & reported to Regt which moved over the river & into line of battle & sent out skirmishers thro' the swamp. 1st Brigade came out to us near sundown Pioneers at work on bridge 5th on protecting them. 2nd Brigade came & 13 pieces of artillery in evening also 33rd Mo of our Brigade got two letters from Anna after night. All well. relieved in night by 114th Ill after being on duty for 1 day & a half. our boys found plenty of rebs whilst skirmishing.

Cloudy all day with heavy showers from No West in PM. bridge finished & cavalry comd early some 4000 strong & formed in line dismounted & drove the Rebs out of the bottom. we followed after & camped in their (Reb) camp by noon. Boys foraged got us flour & meal & meat for supper. Whicher came with one load of goods which he sold in less than hour. Kennedy also came out. Cavalry drove Rebs to near Oxford where they are said to be entrenched

Co H relieved Go G on picket & were relieved in turn by Co I after being on only 6 hours teams went to Waterford for rations with guard in PM. had general Inspection in PM at 2 o'clock. wrote to Anna & sent letter by last mail that will be sent for some time. Cavalry coming back having driven the Rebs beyond Oxford. Have not felt well for several days very bilious & have the diarrhea. Trains all went to Waterford for forage in PM

Wrote to Anna again about home & [?] felt some better than yesterday. 36 Cavalry were captured by the enemy by being surprised by about 600 Rebs in our front. 5 or 6 killed today on our side skirmishing. we got 4 Reb prisoners. Quite heavy fight in PM on Cav & on 2nd Brig & a Brigade from 3rd Div fought & drove a large body of rebs. loss not known yet. a number found dead on both sides

Clear & very pleasant all day wind in So West. great scare in town 2 Companies of Rebs broke thro the lines in south part of city & came in capturing some of the 8th Iowa who are doing Provost duty & nearly capt'ing Gen Washburn. several Rebs killed & quite a lively time but soon quieted down.

Wrote to Anna got 2 No 27 letters from her of date of Sep 3rd & 5th. got news that Morgan was killed & all his [?] captured by Gen Gilland near Knoxville Tenn, appears confirmed

Hot & close all day. little wind in So. did not feel at all well all day. My diarrhea very troublesome. no news of importance transpired today. Mr Bayley preached in evening sutler of 12th Ia came in left on Brigade on R-R about half way from De Valls Bluff to Little Rock Ark. Troops from Vicksburg going there also. Report that we are going to attack Shreveport overland, cannot believe it, distance & march being over 200 miles.

Clear & quite cold all day got in from picket at 9 AM relieved by Lieut Jones 9th Minnesota. was detailed as A.A.A.Gen of Brig as soon as I got in and entered upon my duties at once. Got a letter from Anna and one from Doc all well in Iowa. men out in line at 2½ AM. Corp D C Rogers died in Washington Hospt during night.

Clear & very windy all day. same in No West. took T Andre to Div surgeon for examination. They sent his papers up Col Gillson came to camp from Vicksburg where he had just been exchanged from prison taken at or near Atlanta, Ga. W. P. Bates came out visiting us from Hospital.

Cool all day but not very windy. same in No West. worked at papers most of day an officer got up new set for Thomas Andre & retained old set his furlough came & H Fergusons. the latter started for home with 6 more from Regiment, furlough dated from 25th inst.

Cloudy part of day, blew the remainder, very windy all day. same in So West. sun flying in clouds. Kept in my tent most of AM in an effort to direct Hd Qrs with paper from Thomas Andre for discharge. Got them approved & started up. worked at clerking book in evening & wrote out 11 furloughs with doctors certificate attached in PM. 2480 words written in just 2½ hours. news came of another great victory by Sheridan in capturing 43 pieces of artillery 8000 Hd of cattle & some prisoners.

He got $225.45 in all. He left on Steamer Hillman for Cairo at 5 PM. Came to camp by way of Chelsea north side to see about some brick for chimneys for boys. Clear most of day with wind in No East quite strong and cool. went on picket on old Raleigh Road at 8½ AM with 57 men & 13 non-comsd officers, and 1 officer. Learned that Curtis Pleasanton & Blunt had whipped Price taking 9 guns 2000 prisoners including Maj Gen Marmaduke & Brig Gen Cabell & Gen Fagan reported killed. Price destroyed 400 wagons & blew up ammunition train. Our details making out rolls for pay as detachments, quiet all day. I visited all posts in PM

Cloudy & very windy with some rain this day. Wind in So West. warm & very pleasant in evening. marched with det of 200 men 9 miles below our camp to cut timber for fort. Loaded 65 teams & cut until 2 PM then we drove back rode out part of way in wagons, marched about 14 miles. I was in command of det, got back at 4½ PM got 2 letters from Anna Nos 43 & 45 have not got 44 got an order detaching me & ordering me to report to Col Thomas for duty I will try to get my pay on the order tomorrow.

Rollins wife went on to Paducah. we passed Metropolis at dark 12 miles to Paducah arrived there at 8 PM went to Continental Hotel found some of 35th Ia officers there.

Very cold all day. did not thaw at all. went to town in AM bot Harpers Mag for December, came back & made out reports & got brick hauled for the boys of my Co for chimneys. they got fixed for cold weather. This day fire in town one house burned, we remained at Mrs Clarks during the evening to keep warm Miss Clark played on the piano for us, is a very good player. I wrote to John in evening. Det of 2nd Brig came in from Memphis on steamer "Armada"

High hills & fertile valleys. passed Clarksville where the Ohio & Miss R-Road crosses the Cumberland River at 3 PM. a fine town on the right bank of the river, containing many business blocks built of brick. Tied up for the night about 30 miles from Nashville. Clarksville 65 miles from Nashville

Rainy & cold all day wind in No East. got to Nashville at 2½ PM found "Liberty No 2" there with 40th Mo & 10 Kansas on board who got in last night also 44th Mo. we did not unload as it was too late. Rained all day. I wrote to Anna in evening sending her a piece of oak from the tree under which Grant & Pemberton arranged terms for the surrender of Vicksburg. I also sent her Harpers for December.

I took letters to town found there was some mail for Smiths forces got it but found no letters for me. went to Sanitary Commission got an order to draw supplies for our Brigade, bot some paper & envelopes. Came to camp & wrote to Anna. nothing new from front. Grapevine Telegram report the capture of Hood & Staff but it is not reliable & so is not believed. No news from Smith yet

A fight came off at front Rebs now whipped sorely 2000 prisoners & many killed

Quite clear most of the day with wind in So East. very quiet along the lines for some time. much warmer than yesterday. Paid McKelroy $25.00 I owed him for an over coat for one year since. wrote to Anna & mailed the letter. the Battery near us commcd throwing shells in PM & continued all night. Gen Cook with his wife & two daughters & some citizens witnessed the firing. The Battery made the Rebs put out their camp fires. the gun boats had a fight with batteries on the bank. the 72nd Ohio lost several men in a scout sent out this evening. the enemy were found in strength.

Doc sent me a can of plum butter that came from Iowa, by his orderly. he would have visited me if the weather would have permitted. nothing very new on our part of the line. on our left our forces went out in form & found the enemy as strong as ever.

We got no mail today I loaned Cap Dixson who went on picket my rubber coat he being without any.

Porter & myself went to town in PM came back by 6 PM I bot a picture of Maj Thomas 50¢ [?] Cap Spencer got orders to be ready to move at 4 tomorrow morning.

Cloudy & foggy all day up at 3 AM got ready & moved into line at 7½ AM comcd crowding the enemy forced line about [blank] the 1st Div capturing near 1000 prisoners [blank] pieces of artillery of which no. the 3rd Brigade got 4 pieces. Col Hill was instantly killed.
Charge at evening and 9 men were wounded Co K sent as skirmishers in PM relieved at 8 PM then got to camp.

Pleasant most of day with wind in South. Deployed Co. H. as skirmishers & advanced at daylight advanced over a mile & found the enemy entrenched artillery firing most of AM 4th Corps made a charge in AM. Grand charge by whole army at 4 PM. 1st Div captured 8 guns & 3000 3rd Brig. got 4 pieces several were wounded but none killed wrote to Anna & sent the letter to town by [?] then camped under the hills in Rebel camp they fled towards Franklin.

Rainy & cloudy all day. Wind in South left camp at 9 AM on "Granny White Pike" for Franklin. Sent Rod Parson & Godfrey to camp they being sick. marched about 5 miles and came to 4th Corps on the Franklin Pike then moved near 2 miles into camp in the timber Cavalry crowding the Rebs at every step captured something over two Regiments today

Cloudy & rainy all day very muddy & awful travelling left camp at 12½ PM moved about 5 miles & went into temporary camp. Cavalry have driven the Rebs far beyond Franklin and have taken four more pieces of artillery and many prisoners. Camped at Franklin at 9 PM in the wind & rain. It was very bad & hard for the men.

Cold & raw all day. wind in No East with some rain in evening. remained in camp until 4 PM got some mail & sent off some no news from the front up to 4 PM we then moved up a little over a mile & went into camp It rained & snowed all night & was the most severe time I have seen since I enlisted. McKelroy Dixson Clark Porter & I went to a house off the road & got dry & finally got something to eat.

Very cold & stormy all day. Wind in West, snowed some in AM got a bed last night at Mrs Trickers with Capt McKelroy, Clark & Dixson Lt Porter. Pioneer Corps building pontoon bridges most of day. 4th Corps entered Columbia & 23rd Corps moved up. our Corps did not move all day. It snowed most of day nothing new from Hood this day. Got a room & bed at Mr Miller for the night, did not feel at all well.

Jake Weare called a few minutes, news came that Slocum had got attacked with 15000 prisoners, our men bro't in 30 prisoners in AM I wrote a letter to Anna giving an account of the battle of Nashville & sent the letter

Clear and fine all day but quite cool. Wind changed to S. East. up at 4 AM moved at daylight to crossing & waited until 12M before we could cross. John McCormick went back to Nashville for muster rolls & October papers for Regiment. O. M. Robbins went back sick. crossed over & marched near 7 miles out on the Pulaski Pike. no train came to us all night McKelroy, Porter & I went ¾ mile to house & got our supper. Remained there all night.

Cold & cloudy in AM lay in camp until near 3 PM then moved up 13 miles to within 10 miles of Lawrenceburg passed thru Pulaski
Lay in camp all day
Thursday, December 29, 1864.
Clear & cold all day moved at 7 AM thru Pulaski & then struck west towards Lawrenceburg marched near 15 miles & camped on Hurricane Creek are on the road to Florence. Country very rough & poor I wrote a letter to Doc in the evening. Pulaski is a county seat & is quite a pretty town of 2000 people situated on Elk River distance from Nashville 73 miles & from Florence 65 miles quite a large cotton factory is located there.
Friday, December 30, 1864.
Clear & warm in AM cloudy & rainy in PM & night. broke camp at 10 AM & marched 13 miles in the wind & rain passed Lawrenceburg at 2 PM Crossed a creek beyond it no less that 5 times wading it each time several cotton mills on this creek. the town is nearly deserted a fine monument is there erected to the memory of Capt Allen & some of his men who fell at the battle of Monterrey in Mexico. Camped in the timber about 3 miles from town.
Saturday, December 31, 1864.
Very cold all day but clear wind changed in previous night to No West. & rain changed to snow & sleet. very hard on men. We broke camp at 8 AM did not move until 10 AM marched 15 miles hardest days march of trip so far. got into camp at dark coldest night of the season
