Sunday, January 1,1865.
Clear & cold all day. Wind in So West. broke camp at 10 AM & marched to within one mile of Waynesboro. the road was very good being a graveled pike leading from Columbia to Clifton on the Tenn River. halted once & got 2/3 rations for men, passed a smelting furnace, plenty of iron ore in the hills. marched near 14 miles today. I made out Monthly Report for Dec. before starting same. Companies mustered in the morning. Co H did not for I had no time to make them.
Monday, January 2, 1865.
Clear and very pleasant all day. Wind in So West. broke camp at 9 AM & marched to Tenn River a distance of 16 miles. passed Waynesboro soon after starting a hamlet of 15 houses. Country very poor & hilly most of way. got better as we moved the river. Clifton is the name of the town where we came to the river. found 7 transports & 3 gun boats at landing. distance marched from Nashville 120 miles.

Cloudy & quite warm with some rain. Wind in So West. Remained in camp all day wind changed to No West & the air got cooler towards evening. 3rd Division & part of 2nd left for Eastport, up the river on transports. towards evening I wrote a letter to Anna got the chance of sending it, also sent one to Doc. Mustered Co for Nov & Dec in PM by Maj Dill.

Clear & very pleasant all day but cool. Wind in No West bal of 2nd Div moved & one 1st Brig also our tent caught fire & burnt down in morning from the stove pipe. finished pay rolls & got orders to move immediately. 2nd Brig went up & the 12th Ia 97th Minn of our Brig also went without a horse, wagon or ambulance 2nd Div had a little fight report is our Div are all coming back. we did not move all night

Clear & cold all day, wind in South West. Traded watches with A. Sibley he to give me 10.00 & make out all my reports for 4th Qr/64. Cap McKelroy left for position in Pioneer Corps. I was detailed for picket & went on duty at 2.30 PM with 2 Sgts 4 Corps & 20 men. nothing unusual transpired this day or night. several boats came down from up the river in night.

Clear but cool in AM very pleasant all day quite frosty in early morning got marching orders & left on steamer Izetta at 11 PM 35th Ia 33rd Mo Div Pioneer Corps & Brig Hd Qrs all on this boat, no teams taken. moved up very slowly. the whole fleet moved up together 2 boats being lashed together, and the gun boats took the lead of which 7 accompany us the rain came down copiously in after part of night.

Cool & stormy all day, wind in So West with rain. passed Pittsburg Landing at 4 PM I wrote to John & Em Snyder. we travelled all day & got to Eastport late in night. Rained all day & night. Shaw gave me 10.00 to apply on mess a/c Guerillas fired into some of our boats but did no damage, our boys easily driving them off.

Rainy & cold all day. Wind in No West in PM got off boat at 8 AM & moved back on the hills in the timber & went into camp near 12th Iowa got tent & mess chest before night & fixed up. Lt Evans came to board in our mess until QM comes. 178 N.Y. Inf Brass Band played for us at Div Hd Qrs in evening music sounded very fine. Lt Koehler & Rob Beard left for Nashville to bring up our convalescents & tents &c.

Cold & raw all day. detailed to take charge of 65 men & report to Capt Reyer on steamer New York at 8 AM for fatigue in unloading boat of oats & corn in sacks worked until 2 PM. Capt of boat invited me in to dinner. I got a fine dinner & also bot 30# flour of the steward for my mess. Came to camp by 3 PM. Rained most of night then turned to snow & got very cold. Strong wind in No West.

Cold & windy all day. Wind in So West. did not go out much only to chop wood. My stove smoked badly & I fixed it in PM so it did better. wrote to Anna in evening and also sent her a Nashville paper with an account of the battle in it, written by the 12th Iowa Chaplain.

Very cold & windy all day Wind in No West. Fleet came up, brot Spencer & Whicker, also R Baird & many conscripts for different Regiments 12th Iowa got 50. New colors arrived got several battles inscribed on them.

Very cold all day, but clear. Strong wind from No West. This has been by far the coldest day we have had this winter. Ice formed all day. Worked at stove which smoked badly all of AM. went to Commissary in PM. got nothing but corn meal & pork out of all eatables our new draw only ¼ ration of raw corn & meat with some coffee. orders read on Dress Parade stating that Dept's of Cumberland & Tenn were merged into one under Gen Thomas.

Quite warm all day wind in No East. a Brigade from 3rd Division passed us in AM going out towards Corinth. John & Thompson came from Memphis & many others sent back to Reg't by order Gen Dana who is sending all men to this Reg't. He looks very well, and says he feels well. got some mail in PM. I got one letter from home. Soper (our cook) building a cook house got the frame up this day

Hoover & I walked up the beach & gathered shells. one man killed by lightning on other side of Island & one man killed out of 33rd Wis while oystering by a man in 30th Mo. who missed the target he was shooting at. the ball entering this man & killing him instantly. rained very hard all night

Moved up the bay and into Weeks Bay & Fish River a very crooked stream & up it near 10 miles & landed & moved out 1½ miles & into camp in the pine timber. landed to Donellys Mill 10 miles across to the bay. Very heavy rain all night from thunder showers, passed large turpentine works & large tracts of pine timber was seen from which the resin had been taken. Wrote to Z. Cool & clear in AM wind in No West. 13th AC crossed on the pontoon bridge from Navy Cove and passed on in front of our 2nd Div. Heavy firing heard from vicinity of village landing on the bay. Rebels attacked our pickets at 9 AM 1st 2nd & 3rd Brigade immediately got into line to advance to the picket line & entrenched. marched back after noon & set out detachment to finish the works. caught nine prisoners & one deserter who acts as pilot, showing us the road. saw Genls Case, Howard, Benton, Canby, Osterhaus, Smith, Andrews, Comstock & others

Cloudy & rainy most of day Wind in No East. marched at 6 AM by flank until within a mile of the Fort. then advanced in line of battle, driving the enemy into their works & then entrenched there. 3rd Div on the right, 2nd Brig of 1st Div next, 3rd Brig next, & 13th Corps from them to lower side of fort. This appears to be a very strong work of 3 forts & separate about 30 rods from each other & connected by strong earth works. got batteries in good position in night & then we threw up heavy entrenchments. Casualties in Brig 12 wounded 2 mortally. 5 from 35th Iowa.

Clear & cool all day. Wind in No West. wrote to Anna in PM No 89. Rebels shelled us all day & we replied about 20 wounded in Div one of Co E 35th Ia killed our gun boats got so they could throw shells into the fort. Hoover & Clark went to landing saw plenty of boats could see Mobile many boats lying at its wharf Rebels threw up two rockets just at dark. sent most of our teams to landing after forage & rations.

Cloudy all day with wind in So East. moved out of the line and into our old position in the line fronting the middle fort at 2 PM & got into the trenches after dark. all our guns opened out at 5 PM and continued firing until 7 PM when the mortars commenced & fired all night at intervals of 3 minutes. We got quite a large mail. I got two letters from Anna No 90 & 91. rained a little at times through day.

rather cloudy & cooler than yesterday with wind in No East. finished report of operations of 3 Brig for 1864 and sent it to Anna with a letter. a detail of 12 men was made to go out on the bay, for some purpose, not much firing thro day & [?] much the same as yesterday. Pioneer Corps built several wooden mortars to throw 12" shells a short distance the men going on picket will take them & shoot shell over into the fort with them.

Cloudy & cool all day with wind in No West. learned nothing from firing last night. Colling went to Landing & got papers and a Harpers Monthly for me. Heavy cannonading from 5 to 6 ½ PM just before dark. Geddes Brigade of 3rd Div flanked & captured 268 of the enemy, cut their battle flag & then we all swept into the works & "Spanish Fort" was ours.

Cloudy & rainy part of day found we had captured over 40 pieces of ordnance in Spanish Fort. Moved at 9 AM towards Blakely. crossed Minette River & joined on the left of the 2nd Div along Minette Bay fronting Blakely not 6 miles away. the 2nd Div charged the enemy & captured Blakely with 3000 prisoners just at evening, here in all at the Fort & Blakely near 5000 prisoners.

Cap Clark & I went to Village landing in PM Negro came across from Mobile & reported to Rebs leaving it & burning all the cotton in it. Wind in So East. marched at 5 AM. our Div in the centre. marched 22 miles passing thro Montgomery 4 miles & camping near the Alabama River at 4 PM near a mill which we took possession of to use in grinding corn for our Brigade. I find the city a beautiful place located on several hills & interspersed with trees the state house is a noble building of white or cream colored granite. we saw the smoke of our gun boats coming up the river towards evening.

Report came of the death of Lincoln & Seward by violence. Forrest with quite a force across the river he sent in 2 officers to Gen Smith in PM. no gun boats or transports in sight at evening men been without rations over one day. Brig mess owing me $9.50

Guns fired every half hour all day & month June from 12 to 1 PM in memory of the death of Lincoln which occurred on the 15th of April in Washington at the hands of Booth a tragedian. Steeles colored troops landed on opposite bank of river. We got over one Regiment of Conscripts today.

Wind in So West. orders read to Brig from Gen Sherman of Apl 27th [?] hostilities suspended. also the surrender of Johnstons Army, Gen Smith tells us that we all will be home by the 4th of July. Spencer went to town in evening. heard there was eight millions of dollars here to pay us, which came up on a gun boat today hope the rumor will prove true.

Crossed the river on pontoon bridge & then went into temporary camp until 3 PM then marched onto the steamer Tarascon with 33rd Mo & 2nd Iowa. the 7th Minn & 3rd Ind battery got on board the Peerless, then at 6 PM we started for Selma distance 110 miles which we reached at daylight the next morning

Got off boat at sunrise on the opposite same side as the city passed thro' city & into camp near by at 10 AM. heavy shower during remainder of day. we relieved 2 Brigades of the 1st Div 13 AC who go to Mobile tonight. then we are to move into their quarters. Selma is a beautiful town built on a high bluff overlooking the Alabama River, has 5 churches & about 1200 inhabitants. Nelson destroyed nearly all the gardens &c. here.

Church is of brick & a fine edifice Gen McArthur came in in AM as did our 1st & 2nd Brigades who marched thro' town & camped near the R-Road just beyond the picket lines. We are told that one Brig goes to [?] & the other to Demopolis.

Wind in No East. heard that a telegraph dispatch had been received ordering the immediate muster out of the Call of /62. repaired sewing machine for Mrs Shelly our landlady 16 paymasters arrived on boat & are going to pay off the troops of this Corps an order received returning all detached officers to their Regiments for duty that are to be mustered out very soon.

Clear & very hot in AM Cloudy with heavy rain in PM & evening. I attended Presbyterian Church in AM heard a very good sermon the house was filled with people a boat came up in the night. Lt Washburn came on it from Dauphin Island with the staff left there when we started on the Mobile Campaign. Wind in So part of day. A Mrs Perkins formerly of Norwich Conn. called I had quite a pleasant conversation with her.
