James G. Martin to Robert E. Lee, 9 January 1865
Raleigh N.C.
Jany 9th 1865
General—
I went to the Conscript Office but was after one O'clock & could not get in. I am here now to try to make arrangements with Genl. Holmes.
On my return I was more forcibly struck with the condition of the Piedmont R.Road than when I went on. I fear much it will conquer your army without any assistance from Grant, if some change is not speedily made. The road requires ditching along nearly its whole length, it requires also dry wood & a regular schedule for running the trains. They due run now by telegraph from Danville & they wait at each station for orders. But its great want is an efficient head, who will & can give his whole time to it. The road is very uneven & I thought dangerous in many places. It requires constant working.
I am General
Yours with respect
J. G. Martin
Brig. Genl.
