Unknown to Nellie (?), undated
Miss Nellie
I suppose you will wonder at my seeming impudence in daring thus to write this, after having so long delayed in sending my picture in return for the lovely little token of you, that your sister sent me in your name—perhaps you thought indifference had led me to neglect your kind condescension—"God forbid such a thought"! Now—I hope you are prepared to hear my excuse, the letter was taken from the Office by one of the boys who forgot to give it to me 'till yesterday. Enclosed is the picture, I can hardly hope that it may meet with the appreciation yours received. Hoping that you will pardon / my seeming neglect, I remain

Your devoted
