Arianna E. Tarlton Diary, 1888
Sunday, Jan. 1, 1888
This is a stormy sunday to commence the year. I hope this is not a specimen of what all the Sundays will be this year. when we got up this morning it was snowing but it soon commenced to rain and has rained hard all day. we did not any of us go to meeting. I dont like rainy sundays. I had rather it would rain any other day in the week
I dont think there has been any meeting. I have not seen any one go and nobody seems to be moving out doors. there has been no one in here but Atwell and Charles Knowles and Freddie brought the milk down tonight.

Monday, Jan. 2, 1888
It rained this morning so Ada thought she would put the clothes up stairs. it cleared off nicely this afternoon she might have put them out doors but I told her they would dry most as soon up stairs. we open the windows when it dont storm and they dry very quick. Mr Amazeen is going to observe the week of prayer. have meetings every evening this week. tonight it is at his house the rest of the week at the vestry. they meet every Monday night. Will has gone tonight.

Tuesday, Jan. 3, 1888
The clothes got nicely dry up stairs. Ada has got them all ironed. nice to get the washing and ironing done Monday and Tuesday. We cant always do that when we dry the clothes in the house. I have made a cake to carry to Hampton tonight. we install our Officers in the Rebekah Lodge and after that are to have a colation of cake and coffee.
Mr Amazeen called this afternoon to bring home a book of Will's. he had it to look over the pieces to see if there was anything he wanted for the concert. I must get ready to go to Hampton.

Wednesday, Jan. 4, 1888
We got home from the Lodge just 12 oclock. had a nice time. Ada done some cooking then she took Leon and went down to Kit's to stay awhile. after they went I fastened up the house and laid down awhile for I dont feel very smart. I cant go without my rest one night and feel real smart the next day. Stephen has gone to his Lodge tonight and Will has been to meeting Ada took the horse and went down and got Kit to come up and spend the evening. she cant walk very well she has the cramp so bad. Will carried her home when he came from meeting. it snows.

Thursday, Jan. 5, 1888
This has been a pleasant day. it is growing colder tonight. Cass has been in most all the evening. Will and Justin have gone to meeting. Ada is over staying with Kit.
Mamie has gone to Salem to stay awhile and Kit dont like to stay alone so Ada thought she would go over so to give Justin a chance to go to meeting. I dont hear much about the meetings. dont know if there are many go or if they are very interesting if they are I think likely they will continue them another week. Ada says Kit got a letter from Mamie tonight

Friday, Jan. 6, 1888
This morning it seemed real pleasant and I thought we were going to have a nice evening to go to Hampton but towards noon it begun to cloud up and this afternoon it seems real dull but if it dont storm till after tonight I wont say a word. the Post and Relief Corps are going to have their installation together and I expect we shall have a very nice time. after the installation there will be an oyster supper. the Post can ask their wife's those that dont belong to the Corps and the Ladies of the Corps that have not got soldier husbands can ask them.

Saturday, Jan. 7, 1888
It did not storm last night to keep us home from Hampton but it looked and seemed very much like it. it was not cold at all. it was a good night for us to go. we did not care if it was dull if it did not storm. We had a very nice time. had oysters cake and coffee. corn balls to top off with. then Marcia Dearborn played on the organ and we had quite a time singing mostly army songs. we got home at half past one oclock. there were over 60 there. I do not feel very workish today. done a little cooking this forenoon this eve Stephen is abed Will to meeting Ada is down to Kits.

Sunday, Jan. 8, 1888
Another stormy Sunday we all stayed at home. we shall get used to staying home Sundays if they are all stormy ones. I shant go much if I have to go in a sleigh especially if the snow is drifted. I should like to live where there was no snow. I dont mind the cold weather. it is the snow I dont like. It didn't storm quite all day. cleared off just before night. Will has gone to meeting this evening. We have had a number of callers during the day and evening. Atwell, Sarah and Ari. Natt and Maggie. George, Addie and Fred Cotton. Otis and George Marden

Monday, Jan. 9, 1888
This has been a nice pleasant day. I guess most every body but us has washed. we can see the clothes out in all directions. it is so nice to have a pleasant Monday. when people hang their clothes out doors it dont matter so much to us for we dont intend to put ours out this winter. after we get the lines all put up it is quite a task to take them down again. We have not washed today for Ada has such a cold she is most sick and I dont feel very smart myself. I have commenced the winter with a cold and am afraid it will last all winter. Will is gone to the vestry.

Tuesday, Jan. 10, 1888
Ada washed the flanels and colored clothes. she did not feel very smart so I thought she had better take two days to do the washing this week as she had a very large wash. this is the week for both of the men to change all their flannels and they make quite a wash. Leon has seemed real sick part of the day. I think his teeth are coming. I shall be glad if they ever get through. I am afraid he is going to cut them hard. he has a cold now. he seems better tonight. Stephen was sick all night did not rest any. he dont feel very smart tonight. Mamie Patterson came back today.

Wednesday, Jan. 11, 1888
Ada washed the white clothes today and ironed all the colored ones that were dry. the Baby seemed quite bright this forenoon but this afternoon he did not seem so well and tonight he is sick. we have doctored him up and Ada has gone to bed with him. I hope he will rest well and be better in the morning.
It is a cold windy night.
Stephen has gone to the Lodge with Leavitt. he would not gone it is so cold only they install the officers tonight and he is to be Noble Grand so he felt obliged to be there. George Marden called to say he would not go. True and Arthur came down for the mail.

Ada ironed all the colored clothes today but did not get to the white ones. one of us have tended Baby all the time. Charlotte was down this afternoon. she brought us one of Walter's and Emma's pictures. they are nice ones. Atwell has been in. he is keeping us company. got a bad cold like all of us here.

Friday, Jan. 13, 1888
Ada finished her ironing. I done some cooking. I was intending to go to Portsmouth tomorrow but it has been snowing all the forenoon and this afternoon till about 2 oclock. then it begun to rain so I dont think it will be very good traveling in Portsmouth. It has cleared off nicely now the stars are shining bright. Baby is a great deal better today. tonight seemed real bright, has gone to bed in his own bed and seems as if he would lay there. he wouldn't last night his mother took him with her. there has been no one in today but Geo Cotton and Atwell except the ones that come every day for the mail.

Saturday, Jan. 14, 1888
This has been a lovely day. if the snow had not come yesterday then rain I should gone to Portsmouth but I was afraid it would be so slipery I could not get round very well. I am sorry for I wanted to go. Nell was in this forenoon. she said George's wrist is a little better. he got hurt with ice tongs. she thinks Justin is quite miserable, says he is growing poor and dont have any appatite.
Eliza Ann has been in this evening. we had most a kitchen full of men. Atwell Alvin and Everett. take them with our men made quite a party. Irving was down this morning for his mail.

Sunday, Jan. 15, 1888
When we got up this morning it was dull but it seemed so warm I thought if it did not storm it would not hurt the horse to stand up to the meeting house while noon so I hurried round and got my work done and got all ready to go all but my cloak and bonnet. just before it was time to go it commenced to rain hard so I staid at home. I do hope we shall have a pleasant sunday soon I am tired staying at home from meeting Sunday.
It looks now towards night as if it was going to clear off. Abbott Zip and Lauris came up just before dark. they stayed till about 8 oclock. Will has been to meeting this evening.

Monday, Jan. 16, 1888
Ada washed hung the clothes up stairs. it is so cold hanging them out doors. then we have got the lines up stairs and I think it is a great deal better to put them up stairs. then if it is stormy or windy we can feel easy about them and they dry very nicely.
I have been to Portsmouth went on the noon train. they were so busy that Stephen could not come down for me so he got Charles Batchelder to come. it was very slipery in Portsmouth I was almost afraid to go around. I got me a new dress and all the trimmings corsets, bustle and a new calico dress. Ada said Sarah was in this afternoon Charles Brown called tonight

Ther. 2b    Tuesday, Jan. 17, 1888
It was a very cold morning. I got ready and went to the depot when Stephen did and went to Hampton on the ½ past 8 oclock train to take my dress down to Mrs Philbrick. she is going to make it for me. I also went into Mr Chase's store, into Fannie Philbrick's and Belle Dearborn's. went to see about going to Concord. Belle said she would engage board for me when she did for herself. it begun to snow before I got home from Hampton and has been snowing ever since. it is Belle's birthday also her sister Edna's. she was down to Belle's today. B had a gold watch from West for a birthday present It is a very stormy evening I guess the Musical Association wont have their concert tonight.

Wednesday, Jan. 18, 1888
It was still snowing this morning and has snowed a little most all day. Ada ironed all the clothes that were dry. I done the cooking. I am sorry the musical association have had such bad weather for their concert. they had a part of it last evening and are to have it tonight. there were about 100 there last night. I hope there will be more tonight. Ada wanted to go but Will did not feel very well so they did not go. I guess it is just as well for Ada is not feeling very well and to go so far this bad traveling would not do her any good. George Marden has been in.

Ther. 2b    Thursday, Jan. 19, 1888
This has been a real windy day and the snow has drifted some. Stephen says nothing to trouble between here and the depot. Ada has been real sick today. if she dont feel any better I think we shall have the Dr. I dont know what ails her, a dreadful distress in her stomach. Will has not been to the shop. he is sick. Tonight is the night for the Aid Society. it was to meet here but it was such traveling I did not expect any one would think of coming but there were two came. Annie Odiorne and Ella Tarlton. we did not call it a meeting. had a very pleasant time.

Ther. 2b    Friday, Jan. 20, 1888
I was to go to Hampton today to try on my dress but Ada felt so bad and there was so much work to do I thought I could not go so I sent Mrs Philbrick a postal card saying I could not go. I have finished the ironing and this evening I have done part of the mending. I am very tired tonight. We sent for the Dr this morning but he was gone to Boston and did not get here till 6 oclock. he thinks Ada has sprained her stomach. then he says she is all run down and must have something to build her up. True came for the mail he says Charlotte aint very well.

Saturday, Jan. 21, 1888
Ada dont feel much better yet. I suppose it will take time to get her stomach well. Will did not go to the shop. it has been a very cold windy day. the roughest one of the month and the coldest. when Stephen came from the shop it was only 2 above zero. now it is 2 below and if it keeps growing colder I dont know where it will be in the morning. I had all the work to do alone today and I am very tired. I wish I could work as I could once but it is no use to wish. any one cant do work after they get old as they could when they were young.

Ther. 8b    Sunday, Jan. 22, 1888
This was the coldest morning we have had yet. the glass was 8 below zero at 7 oclock when Stephen got up and he was the first one up in the house. I thought if we ever had a pleasant Sunday I should go to meeting but it has been a clear pleasant day (only real cold) but I could not go for I had all the work to do and did not get done in season to go to meeting. Ada is some better. I am hoping I can leave her tomorrow long enough to go to Hampton to try on my dress. I feel as if I must go if possible. Atwell Sarah Ari and Charles Knowles have been in today.

Ther. 6b    Monday, Jan. 23, 1888
It was another cold morning but it did not seem so cold as yesterday as the wind did not blow. I got ready and went to the depot with Stephen and Will and went to Hampton on the half past 8 oclock to try on my dress. I think I shall like it very much. I guess Mrs Philbrick is a good dressmaker. I came home on the noon train. I did not have time to go and see Belle Dearborn but I got a letter from her tonight saying that Fannie was not going to Concord so she did not send for a room for us, so now I dont know what I am going to do. wait and see I guess. Ada seems better today.

Ther. 1b    Tuesday, Jan. 24, 1888
It snowed about 2 inches last night of the lightest snow imaginable, and about 9 oclock the wind begun to blow and such a day as this has been. Ada could not wash so I thought I must try to do a part today. I had the clothes washed and was aringing them out to hang up when a team drove up to the door. I went to see who it was and found John and Mae there. they said it was real pleasant and still when they started but it was fearful windy when they got here. I got dinner and then they thought they must go. I thought Mae ought to stay but she said she couldnt. I hope they got home all right.

Ther. 10b    Wednesday, Jan. 25, 1888
I have done the rest of the washing and ironed what got dry that I washed yesterday. it has been very cold, dull most all day the sky has looked like snow. tonight it is real dull and if it was not quite so cold I should think it would rain. the sea cries at the south quite loud. that is a sign of rain. Stephen and Will have gone to Hampton to the Lodge. Will is going to take his last degree. then he will be a whole Odd Fellow. I expect it is bad traveling. Natt was up today. George is sick had the Dr this afternoon. has got a bad cold. Horace Moulton broke his leg yesterday. Leon dont seem well tonight.

Ther. 34a    Thursday, Jan. 26, 1888
There is quite a difference in the weather yesterday morning and this. Stephen and Will got home last night about 11 oclock. then it had just begun to snow. it snowed considerable by the looks but this morning it was raining hard when Stephen got up and it has rained and hailed snowed and blowed all day. tonight it is terrible stormy. this is the Relief Corps night I guess there wont be any meeting. I have finished ironing. that is about all I have done but take care of Leon. he seems real sick today. if he dont get better tomorrow I think we shall have the Dr. but I think and hope he will.

Ther. zero    Friday, Jan. 27, 1888
The wind blew very hard all night. this morning there was a snow drift in front of the door most as high as Will's head. it took a long time to get it shoveled away. they did not go to the shop it was so cold and rough and they did not know as there would be a path. It has been a dreadful windy day. too bad to take a horse out. This morning Leon seemed so sick we thought we would send for the Dr. but before we got ready to send he brightened up and tonight he seems a great deal better. I hope he has got over the worst. David Lamprey and True have been in this evening. George is better.

Ther. 6b    Saturday, Jan. 28, 1888
Such cold weather as we are having now I have not seen for years. this morning the glass was 6 below zero. now it is just 9 oclock in the evening and the glass is 8 below. perhaps the eclipse has something to do with it. it is always colder when there is an elcipse. if it has I hope it will be warmer after tonight. the sky was so clear we had a nice time to see the eclipse. Charlotte was down awhile this afternoon Sarah and Ari were in. Charles Atwell and Charles Brown have been in this evening.
Leon has seemed a great deal better today. I am in hopes he will do nicely now.

Ther. 11b    Sunday, Jan. 29, 1888
This was the coldest morning we have had but the wind did not blow and the sun shone bright and it did not seem near as cold as it would had it been windy. Will carried me up to meeting and came for me. I was so glad to go to meeting once more. I have not been since Christmas day. the meeting was in the vestry and it was real comfortable. Since supper Stephen and I have been to Hampton to see Belle Dearborn about going to Concord Tuesday. she says I must be sure and go. I am one of the delegates from the Relief Corps to the Convention. when we got home Atwell and Otis Brown were in here.

This has been a beautiful day Ada washed. we couldn't put the clothes out doors for there is so much snow. it has looked like snow most all day. this evening it seems real pleasant. I hope it will be pleasant tomorrow. I dont want to start to Concord in a storm. Kit came over a little while this forenoon their hired man brought her over and came for her. George and Addie Cotton have been in this evening. Will went to the Literary Society. Ada went over to Kit's a while. Kit made her promise she would when she was up this forenoon. True called down this evening

Mr & Mrs Locke and Mrs Ella Chase from Seabrook came with them and as Ella had no room mate I am stoping with her at the American house. I was sick coming up in the cars.

I have enjoyed it very much have made many pleasant acquaintances and met some old friends two school mates of my young days Lydia and Eliza Ham that were now Mrs Norton and Prescott. Mrs White and Mrs Pray are stoping with them. Ella is going home tomorrow morning but I think I shall stay till Saturday so to go to East Concord to see Uncle Eastman. I know if I dont go he will think hard of it so while I am here I think I had better stay. Saturday, Feb. 4, 1888
It seemed dull this morning when I started from Concord to come home at ½ past 7 oclock and I heard a number of people say they thought we should have a storm. we got into Portsmouth a little past 10 oclock and started for home at 11 oclock. it had just begun to snow nothing to hurt us riding home. Stephen came home with me and did not go back. he is most sick he has a bad cold and his leg troubled him all last night and all day today and jumps some tonight. I have soaked his foot and given him hot drinks and am hoping he will feel better tomorrow. Leon seemed real glad to see me when I got home Ada says he has missed me. I guess I was glad to see him

Sunday, Feb. 5, 1888
This has been a nice warm day but I guess it is rather bad traveling. I did not go to meeting for Stephen is not very well. he has a bad cold and his leg has troubled him two days and nights so he has not got any sleep or rest and he is about sick I want him to have the Dr and if he is not better tomorrow I guess I shall send for him for I don't know what to do. Will and Ada have been to Hampton to see Edith and her baby, a little boy born last Monday night. Ada said Edith was up and dressed. she said she had laid abed long enough. they are very much pleased that it is a boy Mrs Perkins is with her.

Monday, Feb. 6, 1888

Ada opened both of the windows so the air came in very breezy. She got very tired washing today so did not get her floor washed. We sent for Dr Odell to come and see Stephen today. he thought he would understand better about his leg than Dr Jenkins. he came about noon. he says Stephen's liver is bad and that he is very billious and has a bad cold. he wants to see him once more and wants him to keep quiet a few days. Eliza Ann came in tonight

Will is most sick with a cold. he went to the shop but I guess he did not work much. Ada has dosed him up, soaked his feet put flaxseed poultice on his chest, made flaxseed lemonade for him and he has gone to bed. I think we have all of us got more cold it is bad weather to get cold. Nat was up this afternoon. He says George is about the same.

I could not go to meeting if I had wanted to for Will is most sick with a cold and Stephen had all the out doors work to do and there was considerable snow to shove. Leon has one little tooth just pricked through today. I hope when the others get through he will feel better. Leavitt George Marden Otis Charlotte and True and Charles Knowles have been here today. Ada made some ice cream this afternoon, froze it with snow. it was very nice. the sea cries very loud at the south. I guess we shall have rain next. I hope if it does storm it will rain. Stephen went to work today. It was a cold morning. last evening those that were willing to give something to George to cheer him up a little and help him along now he is sick and not able to work were to meet at the vestry and carry what they were willing to give and Leavitt would take it to him. but it was so very cold there were but few went. others have carried things today. we did not any of us go. We do have the most changable weather. no wonder so many are sick. Will is better but did not go to the shop. I am most sick myself today. I have the hardest cough I have had this winter. I feel more like being abed than I do like working but we have got to work unless we are sick abed. Sarah has been in this afternoon. George was up this forenoon I think he is looking well. he says he is better but it tires him to walk. I should think it would this slipery traveling. when Mamie came tonight for the mail she said Kit had a little boy born about half past 10 oclock.

It has been a nice pleasant day but I have not enjoyed it very much. I have been most sick all day. did not get up till most noon. I had to get up then I coughed so hard I could not lie down. I sat up a while then just before 12 oclock I took Leon and laid down again he had his nap and his mother took him up and I lay till the middle of the afternoon. then I got up and found Mrs Perkins and Caddy here. they will stay till tomorrow. I am real glad they came but wish I felt better. Will went to singing school tonight. Stephen Ada and Caddy have been to the Depot. it is past 10 oclock all are abed but Stephen and I.

Sunday, Feb. 19, 1888
Another mild pleasant day. Will has been to meeting. I have not felt able to go even if we did not have company. if we had been alone I should have been abed the most of the day for I feel about sick. Leon has a bad cold I expect he has caught it from us. Mrs Perkins and Caddy went away about 4 oclock. we had a nice pleasant visit with them. should been glad to had them stay longer. after they went Will and Ada went to ride. Charlotte has been down Justin and his two boys have been in. he says Kit and the baby are doing well. We heard that the Christian church in Rye was burned last night

Monday, Feb. 20, 1888
A rainy day. not very cold wind south and south east. Ada has washed. she had a very large wash. did not get all through till noon. some how our washes seem to grow larger every week I some times I think I hardly know where all the clothes come from. Stephen says the Christian church is really burned. (I was hoping it was a false report) caused by overheating the furnace. I am very sorry for the people. Mamie says Kit and the baby are getting along nicely. Leon and I have felt most sick today we have got such colds. if he feels as bad as I do I dont blame him for worrying.

Ther. 42a    Tuesday, Feb. 21, 1888
I have just got home from the Lodge and while I am getting warm I thought I would write a little. Stephen did not go. I thought I ought to go and as Leavitt came I went and I am glad I did. they voted to invite Union Lodge of Portsmouth to visit us the 20th of March. Ada and I have done the ironing today. Ada done some cooking. it seems nice to get the ironing all done Tuesday. the clothes dont always get dry so early in the week but they dryed nicely yesterday. Nell was in tonight. she said she washed for Kit today. Will went to singing school this evening.

Wednesday, Feb. 22, 1888
This has been another nice day but I expect these warm days are making bad sloppy traveling. the Almanac says the last half of Feb will be the coldest. I think it is just the opposite. the last part so far has been the pleasantest.
I have finished Leon's red shirt today and cut his blue dress. I want to get that made then make his white one next. I dont get time to do very much sewing.
Stephen and Will have gone to the Lodge tonight. I dont expect them home very early. Alvin Jennie and Arthur have been down and spent the evening. they said True & Charlotte were over to Rye.

Thursday, Feb. 23, 1888
It has been real pleasant part of the day but now towards night it looks very much like rain. I really hope it wont storm tonight for the school teacher is going to have her exhibition in the school house and the Literary Association is going to furnish supper, cake and ice cream Ada made a cake this forenoon to carry.
They have all gone to the school house but Leon and I. I have just got him to bed he is talking and singing but I guess he will go to sleep soon. Most 11 oclock. They have just got home. said everything passed of splendidly. thought it was the best one.

Friday, Feb. 24, 1888
We are having beautiful weather. if it was the last of March we should think it was very nice and that we wouldn't have much more cold weather, but when we think what a long cold windy month March is, we feel like saying wait till the first of April before you begin to talk about warm weather. Miss Chesley and Annie Sluper called this forenoon. Miss Chesley came down to the exhibition last night. I was glad to see her. she said she wanted to see the baby. she liked his name very much. Emma Knowles and Georgie came down this afternoon. Addie Cotton called. she said they cleared $13.50 last night. I think they done well.

Saturday, Feb. 25, 1888
It was quite dull all the forenoon about noon it commenced to snow and snowed quite fast for two hours or more. then it begun to rain and rained all the rest of the afternoon and most all the evening. the wind blowed hard and is still blowing but I dont think it is raining now. the sea makes a good deal of noise. I guess the wind will blow up fair weather by morning. I hope it wont snow any more I would rather it rained. Alvin was down the first of the evening to get some money to pay the minister. the aid society promised to pay what they lacked.

Sunday, Feb. 26, 1888
It seemed good to have a day that I could go to meeting not stormy nor any of us sick enough to keep me at home. After dinner Stephen and I went to Hampton to see Abbott but they were all gone so we went into Lizzie's and staid there awhile. I didn't want to stop till dark it was such bad traveling. so much water then the snow slumped very bad. when we came home I called in to see Mrs Reuben Brown. I have been wanting to go to see her for a long time. she says she is pretty smart now only she does not gain her strength very fast. she cant expect to gain as a young person would after being so sick

Elmer was buerried three years ago today.
Monday, Feb. 27, 1888
Ada washed today, put part of the clothes out doors. those all got dry and I have ironed them. I guess the others will all be dry in the morning. Horace brought us down a bushel of apples this afternoon. we were very glad of them. Zip was up this afternoon. she said Abbott was very sorry he was gone yesterday. she came up to see if I thought Cad would go to Hampton to work for her sister May. she is going to board shoe workman. Cad has a place in Exeter so I thought she could not go. Will had to kill our poor kitty tonight she has been sick most a month and was growing worse I think she had a cancer.

Ther. 5a    Tuesday, Feb. 28, 1888
We have had quite a change in the weather and we feel it. it is real cold and windy. I finished the ironing this forenoon. Nell came up for the mail tonight she told Will they had a wonderful good time to the Literary meeting last night she and George went. Will did not go. I made a cake to carry to the vestry tomorrow evening. had real good luck with it. I like to make it the day before. that gives the frosting plenty time to get hard. I have been to singing school this evening. it is very cold. Mr Boynton and Solon called for me and brought me home. there were a good number out, more than Solon thought would be out.

Ther. 4a    Wednesday, Feb. 29, 1888
Mr Boynton called this forenoon to say the choir is to sing two pieces tonight. he had picked out two in the new singing book and we are to go down to Nell's this afternoon to rehearse them. I like a little more time if I am going to sing new pieces.
We have just got home from the vestry. 20 minuets of 12 oclock. the lecture by Mr Haines of Portsmouth was very fine indeed and he sung three pieces. very nice they were. Solon sung one piece in the church and after supper he sung three or four more in the vestry. he is a very nice singer. I think the whole was a success. I am glad it was

Just home from Hampton. half past 10 oclock. there were but very few to the meeting tonight. Mrs Green joined the Corps by transfer. we had a very pleasant time even if our numbers were few. it is bright moonlight now.

Friday, Mar. 2, 1888
It is pleasant today and not so very cold. I guess it will be so Ada and Will can go to Rye tonight to the entertainment there. it was last night and is to be tonight. Mr Joy was here this forenoon we traded a little with him.
George and Ada Cotton called this afternoon (when they came from Mr Rufus Dalton's funeral) to see if Will and Ada would like to go to Rye tonight with them. take their horse and our pony they were very glad to do so and have gone. it looks real dull. I hope it wont storm before they get home. Erving Dalton has been in this evening. he says Mr Job Jenness will be buerried tomorrow.

Saturday, Mar. 3, 1888
Baby has been real worrisome most all day. I have had to hold him a good deal of the time. I did not get ready to cook till most noon but I got all done I intended to. I am going to singing school tonight if Mr Boynton calls for me. it is very windy and seems real cold but I guess the wind makes it seem colder.
Just home from singing school. Mr Boynton was late coming I had almost given him up. that is I thought perhaps he would think it was so cold I would not go. he is very kind to call for me every night. I should not go if he did not come for me. he and Solon both want me to go.

Sunday, Mar. 4, 1888
It is windy. real March weather. I have been to church Will carried me up and came for me. I did not have but two scholars in my sabbath school class Carrie Marston and Carrie Brown. after dinner Stephen and I started to visit the sick. first we called to see Horace Moulton. Stephen went in. I sat in the sleigh. then we went to Joshua Smith's. found him better than he was the last time Stephen was there. It was quite cold this morning but it soon grew warmer and it has been a nice day. Ada washed, hung the colored clothes and flannels out doors they got nicely dry. tonight she says the white ones up stairs are most all dry so I guess we shall get them all ironed tomorrow if nothing happens. Leon has been a very good boy today. has worried some but I dont blame him one bit, his teeth must ache his gums are swolen badly. if they feel as bad as mine do I dont wonder he worries. my teeth have been troubling me now for a long time. I have about made up my mind to have them all out very soon.

Tuesday, Mar. 6, 1888
We done the ironing today. Ada made a pie and carried over to Kit with some jelly. she wanted to carry her something but didn't know what she would relish. she has a nice baby so Ada says. I dont expect to see him till warm weather. These are busy times dont seem to be evenings enough in the week for all the Lodges entertainments and lectures people want to go to. Tonight the Rebekah Lodge in Hampton meets, and Mrs Livermore lectures there also. here in Little River there is the Society meeting and singing school. Will is going to Society meeting. Stephen and I to Hampton to the Lodge.

We went to Exeter. got to Dr Pray's office little past 10 oclock. had my teeth all out 7 of them did not take anything. I dont know how I got so much courage they were all surprised to see us and glad we came up. when we came home we called to Aunt Jane's. Ada has not felt very well today. Stephen and Will have gone to Lodge with Leavitt. Stephen thought it would be too much for our horse to go to Hampton tonight

Thursday, Mar. 8, 1888
It seems pleasant today. I guess we shall have a good evening to reorganize our Aid Society. I hope so for I cant have it here next week for next thursday evening the Womans Relief Corps meets and if it is decent traveling I shall want to go.
We did have the meeting there were 18 here in all. not a very large attendance. we elected all the old officers excepting Sec. chose Addie Cotton Sec. we had a very pleasant meeting. after the meeting closed Emmons stayed talking. he has just gone. it is 11 oclock and I have a letter to write.

Friday, Mar. 9, 1888
I didn't feel very much like getting up this morning. it was so late when I went to bed last night half past 11 oclock Ada and I have done the cooking today. thought it would make tomorrow's work easier. this afternoon Belle Shaw and Fannie Rollins came down staid about two hours. they were great strangers. this evening Otis Brown has been up he came to see Will. I asked him to join the Aid Society he did and paid his money. I hope we shall get more money for joining than we did last year. we did not do very well in getting members last year.

Saturday, Mar. 10, 1888
This morning it seemed quite dull. there was quite a bright streak when the sun rose. it rose all nice then went into a cloud. so of course every body thought to keep the sign good, it would storm before night but it has not. it cleared off this forenoon and has been a lovely day and it is not very cold this eve. Will and Ada have been to Portsmouth this afternoon. Solon Boynton came out on the train with them and they invited him down to supper with them as George was not there to meet him. this evening Will took the horse and carried us to singing school.

Monday, Mar. 12, 1888
It seemed real dull this morning and there was every appearance of a storm. Ada washed and I hung all the clothes up stairs. we thought it looked so much like rain we would not put the colored clothes out doors as we usually do. About half past 10 oclock it begun to snow and it has been snowing and blowing furiously ever since and now it is most 10 oclock. Stephen and Will went to the shop in the carriage for it was such bad traveling and they thought it would rain. they came home at four oclock. they didn't know as they could get home if they stayed late. it is a terrible storm

Tuesday, Mar. 13, 1888
Such a storm as we have had. the very worst one we have had this winter and in fact for a number of years. Stephen and Will thought to go to the shop this morning and when it was time to go from the shop to town meeting but the roads were so filled up with snow they had to wait till they were broken out. then it was most noon and it was so squally they did not know what was best to do. part of the time the sun shone out then in a few minuets it would be snowing and blowing hard it has been a queer day and it is just the same this evening. Stephen and Will did go to town meeting. said there was but few there.

Wednesday, Mar. 14, 1888
We finished the ironing today all but the white quilt. that was thick and did not get dry. it has been pleasant part of the day. part of the time it snowed but it has been quite mild thawed a good deal. I think if we dont have any more snow what we have got will soon go off if the weather is as mild as today has been. it is very bad traveling but nevertheless we have had a number of callers today and this evening. Sarah and Ari were in just after dinner then Emma Dalton and Annie Odiorne and Leavitt has been in this evening. Will has gone to Irving Brown's

Leavitt has been in. he has been to Hampton and says it is quite bad in places. Sarah and Ari have been in twice today to bring the milk. Atwell has been sea weeding and he couldn't stop for any thing else. I guess there is a good deal of seaweed come ashore this last storm. I have been quite busy today working on Leon's white dress. have got it most done.

Saturday, Mar. 17, 1888
It has been a nice pleasant day to look out doors but to be out it has been real cold and windy. a real March day blustering and cold. yet the sun seemed very pleasant and it was quite warm out of the wind. I finished Leon's dress I have been making this afternoon it looks real pretty.
Solon came home with Stephen and Will stayed to supper. Mr Boynton called for us to go to singing school. have just got home. had quite a good time. took up some new pieces. I dont quite like the idea of a public rehearsal at the close of the school. I dont think there are scholars enough for it

Wednesday, Mar. 21, 1888
This has been a very rainy day and it is still raining this evening. I guess we shall have bad traveling for some time. I shall be so glad to see good settled weather and traveling. Addie Cotton came down this afternoon to tell me that the committee chosen to see about entertaining Union Rebekah Lodge next Tuesday had put me on the reception committee and also what they wanted me to cook. I hope we shall have better weather and traveling than it is now. if we dont I am afraid there wont be many come. Ada has commenced to clean. has done the most of the sink room today.

Friday, Mar. 23, 1888
Oh! dear when we got up this morning the ground was white and it was still snowing but it soon cleared off and the wind begun to blow and such a cold windy day as this has been I dont want to see again this spring. if there had been much snow fallen last night I guess they would had to break the roads out for it has blowed terribly. Meda Brown called this afternoon. I think she took a good day. Irving has been down awhile this evening. he and Will have been practicing a little Irving plays real well. Will is improving. I guess he will learn by and by. it is real cold and windy tonight

Kit has been over this evening. she says her baby seems quite worrisome. Ada gave her something to put in his milk. we use it for Leon. he dont seem to feel just right tonight. he cried so after Ada put him to bed she went up and brought him down. we got a paper from Carrie quite a piece in it about their visit to our Lodge.

Friday, Mar. 30, 1888
Today has seemed like spring but this mild weather is making bad traveling. I suppose we have got to have that till the snow is all gone and there is a good deal of that in places. there were lots of robins flying round yesterday. I hope that is a sign of milder weather and I guess it is for it has been nice today. I have done some cooking today and Ada has finished cleaning the sink room. she has made a begining I dont know when she will finish cleaning Addie Cotton came down this afternoon. when Fred brought the milk he said Fred Davis had got back came this afternoon.

Saturday, Mar. 31, 1888
Another thawy day. a part of the day it looked very much like snow and once it did spit a very little but after a time the clouds passed away and it seemed pleasant tonight it is bright starlight I hope tomorrow will be a pleasant day for it is the first sunday in the month and it is Easter Sunday and so many will be disappointed if it should storm. We are not having any singing school tonight. Solon is to sing in church at Portsmouth tomorrow so we thought best to put off the singing school till Tuesday evening. Fred Davis called in to see us. Will has gone to Gill's

Sunday, April 1, 1888
This has been a lovely Easter Sunday. Will and I have been to meeting. we missed Solon to sing. I have no doubt Portsmouth people were glad to have him with them. it is very bad traveling. there is in places a great deal of snow and we cant have very nice traveling till it is all gone. Abbott Zip and Lauris have been up this afternoon. were here to supper. after supper Will Ada and Leon went to ride. first they called to Ida's then came back and called to True's Fred Berry and Esther called Fred wanted to see Stephen.

Tuesday, April 3, 1888
It has been a lovely day. the nicest day this spring if we have such weather as this the ground must get settled before a great while. I hope it will for we want to go to Exeter very much. we havn't ironed for this morning quite early Sarah came in and invited Ada Leon and I to go in there to dinner. she said Hattie Ida and the children were coming down. we went over had a good time. Wednesday, April 4, 1888
Another nice day. Stephen says the traveling is improving but it is yet quite bad. of course it will be as long as there is so much snow by the side of the road. Ada has done part of the ironing. we hope to finish tomorrow. Charles Batchelder called up today on business for the Lodge. last evening was Lodge night. we did not go. I thought it was too bad traveling. Charley said they were sorry for there was some business to do that needed us there so he had to come up today to attend to it. there were bills to pay that needed the trustees names so I signed them for him.

Thursday, April 5, 1888
It was pleasant this morning but before noon it begun to cloud up and about the middle of the afternoon it commenced to rain and it has been raining hard ever since. Charlotte came down to see if we were going to the Aid Society. I told her I did not think it was a fit night for any one to go. I dont want to dress up and go out such a night unless it is something of great importance and I guess there will be another night to have the Aid Society Kit has been over this afternoon. it begun to rain after she got here. Justin came after her with the horse.

Friday, April 6, 1888
It rained very hard in the night. Ada said she heard it thunder. it has cleared off real warm and windy. nice to dry up the mud. Kit came in about 10 oclock to see if Ada wanted to go to Portsmouth with her in the cars. we had been wanting to go so I told her she had better go. I had the cooking most done but I guess I shant do much more. Leon is fussy. I am writing this with him in my arms. Ann Marden Fannie Lewis and her baby called the baby is getting to be quite a boy. Ada put the money that Stephen is going to give Leon for his birthday present in the bank. I couldn't go so I thought she had better put it in.

Saturday, April 7, 1888
Pleasant and windy. Ada was about ready to wash the kitchen floor when Will Moulton came to patch the plastering over the stove. it has been broken away a long time and we have been afraid it would fall down. he fixed it nice and is coming to white wash as soon as he can. we want to get that done before we have the room painted. it is growing colder I guess it will be a cold night.
Solon came. Will got the horse all harnessed to go to singing school when Mr Boynton came for us. he made Will put our horse up and I went with him. his horse was so lame we thought he would not use him.

Sunday, April 8, 1888
It has been pleasant today but real cold and windy. nice to dry up the mud but I think it is about time for the cold weather to leave. I want to see some warm days and nights too so if I go out in the evening I shant have to wear my hood. Ada and I have been to meeting. Stephen and Will took care of Leon. he was one year old last night. I dont know what we should do if he was as small as he was then but there is always a way to get along. Otis Brown has been up and spent the evening. he has just gone we are going to have a lunch and go to bed. it is a real cold evening. the ground is froze hard

Monday, April 9, 1888
It was a cold morning but it has been a lovely day. Ada washed. we put the clothes out doors. had a good yard full. right away after dinner we took in the starched clothes and sprinkled them and then commenced to iron the plain ones. we got them all done every one before supper. that is something we have not done for a long time, to wash and iron the same day, it seems so nice to have a good washing day. Kit has been in this afternoon. she wanted Ada to go over this evening so she is over there. Will has gone to Rye to Band meeting. he has gone with our horse tonight

Tuesday, April 10, 1888
It seemed real pleasant this morning. before noon it begun to cloud up and the wind got out. tonight is never looked more like storming. Solon is here we are waiting for Mr Boynton. we are going to the singing school but I think it will storm before we get back Will is not going he has a cold. Atwell just come in. he brought us in some lump fish he caught three this afternoon.
Just got home from singing school. it storms considerable part rain and part snow. I guess it will snow enough to make it sloppy traveling for fast day. it is most always bad traveling fast day. had a very good sing tonight.

Wednesday, April 11, 1888
Ground all covered with snow, raining fast. I dont know what the little chickens would think if they were out doors. we have 6. Will took the hen off yesterday morning. there were 7 when he put them in the hen house (but one was weak and died before noon) he has made a little pen for them near the windows so they will get the sun. It rained all the forenoon. this afternoon it has not rained much but has been real wet and nasty. all the snow that came last night has gone. there is a pound party at Mr Amazeen's tonight. I shall not go. it is so wet, but shall send something. Stephen has gone to the Lodge.

Thursday, April 12, 1888
This has been a real April day this morning it was very pleasant towards noon it begun to cloud up and this afternoon it has rained hard. about sunset it begun to break away in the west and this evening it is all bright starlight. Stephen and I have just got home from Aid Society at George Cotton's. there were a good number there for such bad traveling. this morning Will painted the sink room and after he got it done Will Moulton whitewashed the kitchen entry and sink room. we dont hardly know how to get along without the sink and pump. this afternoon Will and Ada went to Hampton.

Friday, April 13, 1888
Will set two hens last night. he took our own eggs, thought he would see how they would hatch. they cant do much worse than the one that has hatched. I have done the cooking. it is a pleasant day but very windy. Fred Cotton was down this afternoon to get some eggs to set another hen. he wanted enough to set two but I only had enough for one. we have only 10 hens to lay now so we shant get a great many eggs now. Nat has been up this evening and George Marden was in quite awhile. they have all gone now so I guess we will go to bed.
Will has gone to Irving's the Little River boys that play in the band meet there to practice

Saturday, April 14, 1888
It seemed quite dull this morning. about noon it commenced to rain and has rained and snowed ever since and is still raining. it bids fair to be a dull day tomorrow but it may clear off tonight. it has cleared off in the night most every storm we have had lately. Solon did not come tonight. I am sorry it stormed for I think we should rehearse more than once more before the concert that is to be wednesday evening. I cut out a white tire for Leon today and have got it more than half done. Leon fell over on the floor on his face. his teeth cut his lip so it bled and swelled considerable.

Sunday, April 15, 1888
The ground was white with snow this morning when we got up but it did not last long. Will and I have been to meeting. as there was no one to play the organ Will would not sit in the singing seats so Mr Boynton Sarah and I were all there was to sing. we made out after a fashion. Irving came down this afternoon and brought his cornet. he and Will have been playing. when they get well learned it will sound well. Ada went down to Kit's and Nell's after supper Stephen went to David's. I stayed at home with Leon. this evening Ada and Will have gone to prayer meeting.

Monday, April 16, 1888
When we got up it was quite dull and looked ever so much like rain. Ada said she thought she would wash and put the white clothes to soak and put out the colored ones but before she got ready to put any out the clouds broke away and the sun came out so she thought best to put them all out. we did so and got them all dry and part of them ironed before dinner. this afternoon we have finished them all so it proved to be a good day to wash. Sarah has been in this evening. she says she dont know what to do with herself Monday evenings now the Literary Society is done for the summer. Will has gone to Band meeting over to Rye.

Tuesday, April 17, 1888
It seems odd not to be ironing tuesday but we have found enough to keep us busy. we have been doing some cooking for the supper tomorrow night. I have made a cake and frosted it and Ada has made two thin ones and put them together with jelly and frosted it with chocolate. I shall do a little more tomorrow but I thought I could not do any more today. I have a cold coming on. dont know how I shall make out singing tomorrow night. Solon came tonight after supper he and Will walked to the church. I waited for Mr Boynton. Morris Smith & Joe Hobbs Charles Spear & Alvin Batchelder met with us tonight.

Wednesday, April 18, 1888
The sun rose clear and went into a cloud so we thought it would rain and sure enough it did. commenced before noon and rained hard till the middle of the afternoon. I thought we should have a rainy evening for our concert but just before sunset it cleared off nice. now I dont see any reason why there will not be a good number out. I have made cream cakes today. I guess I shall carry my part if I carry what we intend to. each one thought she must do a little extra so to be sure to have enough. Kit has been up this afternoon she wants Ada to go tonight with her. Stephen is going to take care of Leon

Thursday, April 19, 1888
We got home last night about half past 11 oclock. everything passed off nice. there was a very good number out. there was a plenty of cake and ice cream and coffee. I guess every one was satisfied. they took most $30.00 enough to pay Solon and all the other bills. Ada has been up to the church this forenoon to help clear up. Charlotte and Jennie came down a while this afternoon. they would staid longer but Alvin came for them Moses Leavitt and his wife were at their house. I am going to have one of my hoarse spells. I cant speak out loud now only part of the time but I think I must go to Hampton.

Friday, April 20, 1888
We went to Hampton last night to the Relief Corps. I know I ought not to have gone but it has been so long since I went I thought I must go. I have been about sick all day today. laid down this forenoon and afternoon and am now going to bed for the night. I cannot speak a loud word and my lungs are sore. Stephen thinks part of it is that I have strained my lungs singing so much. I said when I had that other bad spell I would not sing any more but I did. now I dont know what I shall do. one thing sure I cant sing much till I can make a noise. Addie has been down this afternoon.

Saturday, April 21, 1888
When we got up this morning it was snowing hard and it snowed till about the middle of the forenoon. then it begun to rain. it rained most all day. at sunset it cleared up a little. this evening it is starlight and the moon shines but it is very windy and seems cold. I guess it is cooler than we have been having. the wind will dry up the mud I guess. Stephen came home about 11 oclock this forenoon. he changed his clothes and went back and he and Sam Dow went to Hampton to see Winn Berry and Leon Blake they are sick. he had his hair cut.

Sunday, April 22, 1888
It has seemed pleasant to look today but the wind has been real chilly. as I cannot speak aloud I thought I would not go to meeting so Ada and Will went. this is Mr Amazeen's last Sunday this year. he is to have two months vacation, then if his health is better he will come back for another year. Sarah has been in. Will and Ada have gone to Alvin's and from there will go to evening meeting. Atwell borrowed our corn popper and when he brought it back he brought us some popped corn so Stephen and I have been eating some in milk. I should have relished it if I had any teeth to eat with. George Marden has been in awhile.

Monday, April 23, 1888
This morning it was real pleasant. about noon the wind got out and it clouded up and seemed real chilly. Ada washed. got the clothes all dry and ironed. they dried better this forenoon than they did after dinner but they all got dry. we have two hens hatching today but I am afraid they wont do very well. Solon came tonight. he and Will have gone to singing school. I did not go for I cannot speak aloud so thought I shouldn't be much help in singing. Ada commenced to wean Leon from the bottle today. when he went to sleep this forenoon he cried 20 minuets. this afternoon 5 minuets. tonight not at all.

Tuesday, April 24, 1888
Another cold disagreeable day. that seems to be the order this month. some of the people have plowed their land but I guess it will be some time before our land will be dry enough. I shall be glad when I can get my plants out doors. Leon was a real good boy last night and he has done nice today. dear little boy. I know he misses his bottle but it will be nice to get him nicely weaned from it. Addie Cotton and Vianna Brown called this afternoon. True and Charlotte have been down this evening. We had two hens hatch out chickens yesterday. Will took off one and gave her the chickens. I dont know how many there are. they did not get out today.

Thursday, April 26, 1888
This has been a nice day. Stephen Ada Leon and I have been to Exeter. it is real good traveling all the way but through the woods. there it was real bad in some places. there was a good deal of snow by the side of the road and we could see in the woods a good deal in places enough for sleighing if it had been in the road. when we came home we called at Aunt Jane's. I went in a few minuets the rest set in the wagon. this evening Stephen and I have been up to Lizzie Moulton's to Aid Society tomorrow Mr and Mrs Amazeen start on their vacation

This is a lovely morning. Stephen and I are going to Hampton to spend the day at Abbott's. I think I shall go to the funeral this afternoon William Lamprey is to be buerried from the Baptist Church. It was almost noon when we got down to Abbotts I thought I would help all I could before I went.
I went to the funeral with Simon and Lizzie. Zip came up after the funeral and we went up in town. there were not a great many to the funeral. I guess there were not a great many that knew of it. the flowers were beautiful. Stephen went to Post. Abbott carried him up and went after him. got home at 11 oclock.

Saturday, April 28, 1888
We are having nice spring weather now. the first of the season. it is a lovely day. warm enough to have the doors and windows open, especially when we have two coal fires going. I have been gone so much this week that I have got all my mending to do so I guess I shall have to be about it. I have not done quite all I intended to for I had a caller and that hindered me awhile. Belle Dearborn was up this afternoon.
Stephen is disappointed tonight because his leg did not come. he did not want to spare it any longer. he has been home most all day. Ada went for Will. he Will has gone to Irving's tonight.

Will finished the wood last saturday. Mr Fogg was here today. I traded considerable with him. he comes once in six weeks. Will has gone to Rye to band meeting. it looks like dull weather, cold and windy

This has been a dull day and part of the day it rained quite hard. I wanted to go to Lodge tonight but there did not seem to be any one going so I am at home. I should had Stephen take our horse and go but he has been so much lately I thought it was too bad to take him out tonight and I shall want to go Thursday evening to the Relief Corps. I got a letter from Carrie Mathes tonight. she said she had ordered the flowers for us for memorial and wants me to spend the day with her when I go for them. I got Uncle Perry's picture tonight. one for me one for Mother.

It was real cold this morning when we were eating breakfast it commenced to snow and snowed quite hard for awhile but most all the forenoon it kept snowing and raining a kind of disagreeable sleet. it has been dull all day and is dark and cloudy tonight. Will has gone to Portsmouth with Frank Brown. I guess he will be cold enough when he gets home Stephen has gone to Lodge. his leg come tonight. it is fixed up nice but it cost a nice price $25.00 that seems a good deal to pay but the leg must be kept in order. Ada has finished cleaning the big chamber and stair way today.

It has been a dull day. rained part of the forenoon. the men in this part of the town have been setting out trees along the roadside by the cemetry. they intended to do it last Saturday (Arbor day) but there was so much snow and ice in the woods they could not get the trees. after the work was done they had a supper at the vestry. We didn't any of us go. I guess there was plenty to help. Will has gone to Portsmouth again tonight with Frank Brown. he couldn't get his musical instrument the other time they went. had to wait for them to send for it. Sarah & Ari have been in tonight.

Tuesday, May 8, 1888
It was real pleasant this morning but now it seems to be clouding up. I do hope it wont storm tonight if it does tomorrow, and I did want to have it pleasant tomorrow for if it is I am going to Exeter. I finished the ironing this forenoon. Ada hung out the overcoats to air and packed away our cloaks, hoods, mittens &c. Kit came in this afternoon and we invited her to go to Hampton with us. she seemed quite pleased, said she would like to go. Stephen Ada and I are going. Will is going to take care of the baby. Wednesday, May 9, 1888
We went to Hampton last night and it did rain before and when we came home but it did not rain very hard when we came home and there was no wind. but Oh! it was so dark I undertook to drive home but I could not see and guided the horse up on the sidewalk and came near tipping over. so I let Stephen drive. he had to walk the horse all the way home. got home at 1 oclock. we had a good time down there all of us got aprons. I think the corps will make considerable. It rained so hard this morning we could not go to Exeter. it has cleared off real pleasant this afternoon. tonight George Marden came down he and Stephen have gone to Lodge.

Thursday, May 10, 1888
Another dull rainy day. I thought towards night it would clear off so I could go to Aid Society but I couldn't get any one to go with me and I knew it would be so dark I shouldn't want to drive home alone. so I concluded I would stay at home and if they had a meeting I would pay my 5 cts. I made three dried apple pies this forenoon. the first I have made this year. Ada has cleaned her chamber today. Arthur came down for the mail just now. he didn't know whether there would be any Aid Society or not. Irving Brown is down this evening with his cornet he and Will are practicing.

Such a rainy day as this has been, the worst one yet. toward night it left off and seemed as if it might clear away sometime but this evening it seems dull only it dont rain. We have been trying two or three evenings to go to Hampton to the store but didn't think it was fit to go. we want to get some oilcloth to put up in the sink room before we use it any more so tonight Stephen and Ada thought best to go. Will has gone to Gil's to band meeting. before he went he set two hens, took our own eggs. he thought they would do best.

Sunday, May 13, 1888
The weather is all one kind dull and rainy. I should like to write something else but I dont get a chance. I guess our ground that George plowed for us will need to be gone over again. the rain will beat it down most as hard as it was in the first place. I dont know whether the minister came to preach today or not for it was so rainy we did not any of us go to see. Will has been up to Alvin's since supper I dont know as he asked them anything about it for I did not ask him. he said Emma was better yesterday. her head has been very bad I guess. the Dr had to give her morphene

Ada has washed, got most of the clothes dry. I have ironed part of them this afternoon. I had to keep a fire to roast some fresh pork for supper so I thought I would iron a while. It is 10 years today since we moved down here. there has been quite a change in this part of the town since we came here. a great many have died. 10 years is a long time to look forward to but it soon passes away. tonight is Rebekah night. I guess there wont be much of a meeting, it is so rainy.

It didn't seem very pleasant this morning but I thought I must go to Portsmouth to get the flowers for Elmer's and Albert's graves. Will walked to the shop. Stephen waited till I got ready to go, which I did as soon as I could. I got to the depot before 8 oclock the train went at half past nine oclock. Carrie was expecting me. I found the people in Portsmouth very much excited about the terrible murder that was done there Sunday night. a very nice young man named Henry Whitehouse was horribly murdered as supposed by a man named Palmer is is arrested
I got the flowers for tomorrow.

Sunday, July 1, 1888
The hail last night did not do very much damage to the garden but it most spoiled my plants. there was quite a large spot of hail on the ground back of the house this morning. I guess it has done considerable damage to the crops. We got home real early from the Lodge last night. this morning when we got up it was all thick fogg but it soon cleared away. Will came home for us, carried us to the depot to take the noon train. Addie Cotton went with us. I guess we had good luck having Leon's picture taken. the artist thought they would be good. he will send the proof to us soon. Leon was one of the best boys all the time we were gone. We used to think Albert was one of the best babies to carry away but Leon is just as good. I think we shall have a stormy day tomorrow. it seems like it.

Thursday, July 19, 1888
It is a stormy day, that is it has rained all the forenoon and bids fair to continue the rest of the day. rain was much needed. the ground was very dry. we had nice weather to get our haying done and to go to Portsmouth to have Leon's picture taken so we cant find fault. Ada is cooking this forenoon. It didn't prove to be quite so rainy this afternoon as we thought it would. it rains a little this evening. I am sorry for tonight the Relief Corps meets and I wanted to go but Stephen thought it was not fit for me to go. Will and Irving have gone to Rye to see about a new instrument for Will to play on, an alto one

Uncle Jacob is very sick. they dont think he can get up again. Monday, July 23, 1888
This has been a splendid day. I thought last night that it would be a stormy day today but you cant tell much about the weather over night. some times it will seem very pleasant at night and in the morning be stormy. I am not good at reading the weather signs. Ada washed had a very large wash but we got everything ironed. she done the most of it. I helped some and worked some on her dress. we got a letter tonight from Nessie saying she would come over next Sunday with the two little children and make us a visit. Tuesday, July 24, 1888
Not quite such a nice day as yesterday. still it has been pleasant. Ada painted some I have been working on her dress. she says she hates to have me make her a dress because I have to try it on so much. I think it is better to do that way and have the dress set nice than to make it up any how and get no good fit on it. When Stephen came home tonight he brought a letter from Mrs Blake saying she and Uncle Eastman were coming to make us a visit coming Saturday. so I have written to Nessie for her to put off her visit for one week I thought we should all enjoy it better for them to come seperate.

I thought I should get time to work on Ada's dress today but I have not. we have done the ironing and had string beans to get ready for supper. Kit was up awhile this forenoon and Addie was down this afternoon and that bothered us some with the ironing so Ada did not finish till most night. then Leon has been very troublesome. I dont think he feels very well he has had a sore in his head. Katie came from Emma's today. James came yesterday. they are going home tomorrow morning. Katie's better but I think she will have to be very careful. we have all been up to see her tonight. Stephen and Will have gone to the Lodge. Stephen carried us up, we walked home.

I have not done but very little on the dress today. my eye was so bad I did not feel much like sewing. I dont know what ails my eye. last Tuesday I felt a little bunch on the upper lid almost to my forehead. it was a little sore and it has been growing worse ever since all that side of my face feels bad. I hope it will be better soon. I dont see what it is.

Tuesday, Aug. 7, 1888
Another dull day. I am so sorry it is so dull I am afraid Nessie will get homesick. Ada thought she had better wash if it was dull. she hung all the colored clothes out doors, put the white ones to soak. the ones she put out doors got just dry enough to iron without sprinkling so we ironed them all this afternoon. I do hope it will be pleasant tomorrow. we want to get the rest of the clothes dry. Bert and Irving came in tonight and played three or four tunes with Will. then they went all of them down to Nat's to play. Will has just got home. the children were delighted to hear them play.

Such a nice day as this has been—every day seems to be more pleasant than the one before. we went down to the depot this forenoon to see if Mrs Garland came. I guess she did not, at any rate I could not find her and Stephen went over after a while and looked again. I was hoping she would come I wanted to see her. this afternoon and evening we have been to camp fires. had a very nice time. Belle came back this afternoon so we all went together this evening I should like to know how Leon is getting along. I hope he has not been sick since we have been away. I dont know whether we shall go to Concord tomorrow or not

I guess it rained most all night. every time I waked up it was raining hard and it rained hard all the morning. when it was time for us to go to the depot Mr Gordon took his horse and carried us down. I thought he was very kind. we got here little past 10 oclock Uncle came to the Depot for us with his horse. I had no idea he would do so. I think everybody is real good to us. it did not rain when we got here. George came over to the Depot from the shop to see us and has been in this evening. Frank came over this afternoon. We have called over there this evening saw them all.

This has been a lovely day, just comfortable. this forenoon Uncle and Stephen took a ride over Mr Robinson's farm. before they got back George came in. after awhile Mr Alexander Lilly the two children and a cousin of Lilly and Frank's came over. they staid awhile. when they went they invited us over to see them. I didn't think we could go as we were going to Franks to dinner. we all went. after dinner they had a number of callers. when they were gone Mr Robinson had his span of black horses harnessed and he and Frank, Stephen and I went to ride till dark then called on Lilly. had a splendid time.

Monday, Sept. 3, 1888
Another cool day. we arrived home safe at 6 oclock. we started from East Concord about 10 minuets past ten oclock and got to Portsmouth at one oclock. went to Carrie's she got dinner for us. I told her not to put herself out for us but she was determined to do just as she pleased. I am glad to get home again. it seems good to be here but we had a very nice time while we were gone and enjoyed every minuet. something very remarkable happened in the heavens as we were coming home. when we got to Raymond the men all got out to see it. three circles round the sun and a rainbow in the west.

Tuesday, Sept. 4, 1888
This has been rather a chilly day. Ada washed got most of the clothes dry. towards night it was so damp the thickest ones did not get quite dry so she brought them in and hung them on the frame. I guess they will be dry in the morning. Uncle Jacob died last night he has been very low for a number of days. has taken no nourishment since Wednesday. Addie Cotton was in this afternoon. Nell was up this morning, said her Uncle John Akerman was to be buried this afternoon she and Kit were going to the funeral. Mr Boynton just called to see about singing tomorrow.

Wednesday, Sept. 5, 1888
It looked real dull last night and early this morning but it soon cleared up and has been a beautiful day, rather windy but real clear. Uncle Jacob was buried this afternoon. Stephen and I went. Mr Boynton Ida, Sarah, Norman Marston and myself sung. there were a good many relatives there. Ada done little ironing. we shall have to finish tomorrow. it was Nell's Uncle William Tappan that was buried yesterday instead of her Uncle Akerman. Justin made a mistake in the name. Will has gone to Rye to band meeting getting ready to go to the flag raising tomorrow night in Hampton. the band is going to play

Thursday, Sept. 6, 1888
There was a little frost last night not enough to hurt any of the plants and vines. it seemed quite cool this morning but has been a very pleasant day. We have finished the ironing and I have canned a two quart jar of pickles. I am not going to make a great many pickles this year for my cellar is not fit to keep them in. it is too warm. I want to make a little picklelilly. there is a flag raising in Hampton tonight near Simon's. Stephen is going to the raising after he leaves me at the Hall. it is Corps meeting night and I am going. the band is going to play for them

Friday, Sept. 7, 1888
After the Corps was out I walked down to Abbott's to find Stephen. the celebration was all over when I got there and the band all ready to go home so I did not hear them play. it was so cold when I came home that I covered up my plants. I guess it was well that I did for there was a heavy frost. it was real cold this morning. I went to Exeter and got Mother. it is real late for her to be coming down. she will stay now till cold weather. Caddy gave me quite a lot of crab apples. we called to Aunt Jane's when we came home. she gave me a paper bag full of pairs. Cad bought Ada a real pretty rose jar. it is real cold tonight.

Saturday, Sept. 8, 1888
It has been dull all day. it rained a number of times a little this forenoon. this afternoon it has rained hard and is still raining fast this evening. we have done some cooking and some other work. have got along with the work nicely. Mother is here. she helps a good deal. it seems nice to have her here once more. it is over a year since she went from here. she will stay a good long time now. we shall plan some way so she can stay after cold weather comes. I have been working on Leon's dress, his all over embroidery one, making it longer so he can wear it this winter.

Sunday, Sept. 9, 1888
This has not been a very nice day. it has been cloudy all day, terrible muggy warm uncomfortable feeling weather. Will and I went to meeting. after dinner Will and Ada went to walk with George and Nell and Mother Stephen Leon and I went to ride. first we called to see Mrs Ruben Brown then we went down to the sea to see Mrs Garland. she brought out Martha's baby. she is very fat, a nice baby 7½ months old. I should think she would weigh considerable more than Leon. when we came home we called to see Nat and Maggie. then home we did not get out of the wagon.

Monday, Sept. 10, 1888
This morning when we got up it was all thick fogg but after awhile it cleared off and has been a nice day. Ada washed and got the clothes all dry. I have sprinkled them and got them all ready to iron tomorrow. I have finished Leon's dress. it looks well. I guess it will be long enough now. he grows tall fast. we had company to supper. Alba Foss came home with Stephen and Will. I dont know how it happened I did not think to ask Will. they have gone to Rye to Band Meeting with our horse tonight. Ada has been down to Nell's awhile. She and Leon went to Kit's and Nell's this afternoon.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 1888
It has been a lovely day but tonight it is cloudy. I am afraid it will be dull tomorrow. I hope not for the picnic is to be and a good many will be disappointed if it is not pleasant. Ada has been cooking today to carry. we have done all the ironing besides. we feel very well satisfied with the days work. we heard today that the Dr said Julia Knowles could not live. she has been quite sick for some time with the bloody disentary. now she cant keep anything on her stomach. poor Julia she has been sick a great deal. George Batchelder gave Stephen a small basket of pears.

we have canned pears crab apples & tomatoes today.
Wednesday, Sept. 12, 1888
This morning when we got up it was raining hard. could not have any picnic today I was real sorry for those that were going. they all got everything ready and of course were disappointed. it cleared off just before night and is very pleasant now. I dont know whether they are going tomorrow or not. no one seems to know anything about it. our little brown leghorn hen made her appearance in the henyard today with 8 little chickens. she stole her nest and has got nice little chickens. I dont like such late ones but I cant seem to help myself. Nat and Justin have been in this evening.

Thursday, Sept. 13, 1888
This has been a beautiful day, nice for a picnic but Little River folks did not go, only those that belong to the band. Rye folks went. Will did not expect to go he went to the shop to work but the band came this way to get the little river members and Ada sent Will's clothes to the shop by them and he went. Stephen and Justin have been to Exeter to convention they were delegates. Charlotte, Jennie and Lizzie Jenness have been down this evening. Lib came up to go to the picnic but she will have to wait till another time I guess. I think it should have been understood that if it stormed it would be the first pleasant day.

Friday, Sept. 14, 1888
It was quite cold this morning Stephen and I started about 9 oclock for Hampton Beach. the Association at the Centre had their anual dinner at Leavitts Hotel we thought as we had not been for a number of years we would go this year. We were very glad we did for we had a very nice time there were about 50 in all. when we came home we called at Abbotts, went in and staid till most nine oclock. it is now most ten. Ada was sitting up for us. Will has been to Irving's to play. he came just after we did. I think there will be a frost, it is quite cold.

Saturday, Sept. 15, 1888
There was a frost last night it is cold this morning but pleasant. I guess it is going to be a nice day. Harley Moulton fell out of the wagon this afternoon and broke his arm. I am not surprised that something has happened to them over there, it is a wonder some one has not broke his neck before now. I never saw such children in my life always into mischief. Mrs Moulton is here. she moved down this week. now she is going to run the farm. their hired man left yesterday and George Tarlton is going to help them awhile. Leon has got so he walks round real smart. he is very proud.

Sunday, Sept. 16, 1888
This has not been a very pleasant day. tonight it looks very much like a storm. Abbott and Zip have just gone home they were afraid it was going to rain. they came up the first of the afternoon and staid to supper. I guess they would staid longer if it had not looked so dull. I hope it wont rain tomorrow. Ada wants to wash. somebody will be disappointed tomorrow night if it does rain. there is a democratic flag raising in Hampton. Nat and Maggie have been up tonight. she is quite a stranger. Will and I have been to meeting today.

Monday, Sept. 17, 1888
This has been a bad day to wash. it has not rained so very much but has been misty damp and nasty to be out in. Ada washed, hung out the flannels and colored clothes, got the thinest ones dry enough to iron, but we have not ironed any. I have been working on my dress a little I dont get much time to sew. Mother fell down tonight. Ada was down cellar to get victuals for supper and Mother went to the door to take them. Leon pushed his horses up right behind her. she did not know they were there and she stepped back and fell over them. I dont think she is hurt much but it must have scared her very much. it frightened us all most out of our senses.

Tuesday, Sept. 18, 1888
Such a rainy day as this has been. it rained very hard all the forenoon. after dinner it did not rain right down so pouring, but was very misty and the wind blew hard. tonight it seems as much like dull weather as any time today. it is just about such weather as we had 14 years ago today. that was the day Father died. what a change there has been since he died. George Cotton brought us down a splendid large squash this noon. tonight when Arthur called he gave us a large basket of apples and a small basket of pears that Lydia sent to us.

Wednesday, Sept. 19, 1888
It has not rained any today neither has it been pleasant. Ada put the clothes out but there were only a few of the thinest ones got dry. it seems this evening as if it was going to clear up. the moon is trying to shine. I guess it will be pleasant tomorrow. I hope so. we want to get the clothes dry. it seems odd to have clothes hanging out so late in the week. Will has got the mumps. was taken Monday. his face is swolen considerable on both sides. Irving has been down this evening. he says they looked just as the sides of his face and neck did. I have canned a jar of pears. Lydia sent the pairs.

Thursday, Sept. 20, 1888
Not a pleasant day by any means. we have managed to get most of the clothes dry and ironed. got them all done this forenoon. some that did not seem dry enough to iron we left out hoping they would dry but it begun to rain so they are out now. the first of the afternoon By and Han came. they hired a man to bring them down from Exeter. I am glad they come although they cant stay only till tomorrow. I was intending to go to Hampton tonight to the Relief Corps but I thought as they would be here only one night I would not go. Georgie Mace and Lucasty Johnson called this afternoon. I told Georgie I could not go.

Friday, Sept. 21, 1888
I was in hopes it would be pleasant today but it has been more rainy than it was yesterday. By went up to the shop with Stephen this morning and took the horse home so to have him to go back to take the train home. it rained pouring when they went to the depot. we tried all we could to have them stay longer but they thought they could not. we had a good time but it seemed short. they want us to be sure and go to see them this fall. I dont know how that will be. tomorrow is the day for the picnic. I guess there wont be much of a time. it has rained every day this week.

Saturday, Sept. 22, 1888
We thought this forenoon that it certainly would clear off. the sun came out and it seemed real nice but after a time black clouds came up and then it begun to rain and this evening it is nasty misty and looks like another dull Sunday. we finished ironing the last of the clothes this afternoon. I dont think we shall have another such a week this winter as this past week has been. we have had quite a number of callers tonight. Leavitt Dalton George Marden George Tarlton and Atwell. Julia Knowles is going to get well. she is a great deal better.

Another dull day. I was in hopes it would be pleasant today. I wanted to go to the funeral of Charles Chase of Hampton Falls. he was killed in a railroad accident out west last Tuesday, brought to Hampton Falls yesterday. funeral this afternoon. the Odd Fellows had charge. he belonged to the Lodge. Stephen went. he said it was the most impressive funeral he ever went to. there were over 60 members of the lodge there. I went to meeting, walked home. Irving and George Tarlton Uncle Nat and Aunt Maggie have been here tonight. Abbott told Stephen that Mr Robinson of Deerfield died last Sunday very sudden of neuralgia of the heart

Monday, Sept. 24, 1888
Today has been a very pleasant day, rather cool for September but it has been dull so long and we were so glad to see the sun shine we did not mind so much if it was cold. Ada washed and got all the clothes dry. she ironed all but the starched things. those were so dry they had to be sprinkled I have taken my plants in today, put them in the parlor. I shall keep them in there till it gets real cold. Will feels pretty well today. he has built the coal pen, cleared up the hen house and yard, and finished getting in the wood. Ed Edith and the children called tonight

Ada is going to slice some tomorrow. Ada Kit and I have been to Hampton this evening. Mr Chase's store was not open. they shut up at half past 6 oclock Tuesday and Friday evenings. we did not know it or we should not have gone. the boys met here to play tonight. it is dull.

Such a rainy day. it rained pouring all the forenoon and the wind blew very hard. I made my pickel lilly and Ada done some cooking. this afternoon Ada has sliced tomatoes to make pickels of. it has not rained much since noon but the wind has blowed very hard. just before night it cleared off very pleasant just in time for the democrats to have their flag raising in Rye. Will and Ada have gone with George and Nell. the band is going to play. I expect they will have a wonderful time. I should think it would be very wet to march. Will is 27 years old today. I have worked a little on Ada's dress this afternoon

Ada washed. she had a very large wash. a part of the clothes got dry enough to iron. some of them she brought into the house and hung them on the frames and they all got dry before night. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 1888
Another dull rainy day. we have ironed most of the clothes. there are some thick ones in the shop that did not get quite dry. still we should have tried to finish them if we had not been obliged to do some cooking. that took part of the time. I have finished Ada's dress, another good job done. I am always glad to get my work along. I have made about two quarts more of chopped pickel lilly today. I had a few tomatoes that did not freeze so I took them off and used them. Stephen has gone away with Justin Moulton he did not tell where. I guess it is something about politics

I have got Ada's garnet dress out and looked it over to see about making it over I shant get any time to work on it till next week. I have had two pairs of new pants to make shorter for Stephen. he cant get any to fit him. I think it is a job to have to alter new things. Stephen and Will have gone to the Lodge. I guess they will find it cold enough. the wind blows very hard. it will shake the apples off.

Charlotte was down this evening. she did not stay long. Emma Knowles was in the place today. she wanted to see Georgie but I guess she did not. we have done the mending today.

I wanted very much to go to Hampton this evening to the Rebekah's but it was not fit for us to go. we done part of the ironing. we had so much we thought we would not try to do it all for Ada wanted to commence to clean a little this afternoon so after dinner she begun the clothes press in the sitting room. she had not done but little when Kit came over with the baby and Harley and before she got ready to go Hattie Brown came in and before she went we see Eliza Ann coming. she made us a present of $2.00 to pay for bringing the mail.

This morning and a good part of the forenoon it was real dull and foggy. after dinner we thought it was going to clear off but about 4 oclock it begun to rain pouring and it rained hard till past 7 oclock. I was sorry it rained for the folks that were going to have the harvest supper at Rye will be disappointed. Will and Ada were going. the band were going to play. I suppose they will have it tomorrow night. Ada asked Kit and Hattie to go with them. Kit has been over this evening she was quite disappointed to have it rain. it is very pleasant now. the moon shines bright. Charley Knowles gave me a pair of knit slippers of his Mother's yesterday. they are very nice.

Thursday, Oct. 18, 1888
It has been a very nice day. I wish it had been as nice yesterday. then Rye people would had their harvest supper last evening and I could have gone to relief corps tonight but Will and Ada have gone to Rye tonight with the horse so I could not go to Hampton. Hattie and Kit went with them. Ada cleared the sitting this forenoon and had just begun to clean it when home came Stephen with Capt Dudley from Concord. he is round getting money from all Odd Fellows for the Soldier's home. Stephen went with him through this town. he was here to dinner. Ada didn't do much cleaning

Friday, Oct. 19, 1888
This morning it was beautiful and we thought what a nice time the republicans would have tonight for flag raising and torch-light procession. this afternoon it clouded up and this evening it is raining hard. it rained when Stephen and Ada went. Will went first. he went with the band. I suppose they will have the speaches but it is too rainy for the procession. I am real sorry. Ada has cleaned a little today. she had just begun when Kit came in she did not stay long. this afternoon I have been trying to arrange the drapery of her dress and have had to have her to try it on. I went to Kit's and Nell's this forenoon.

It has not stormed any today neither has it been very pleasant. this afternoon the sun shone out part of the time but there were a good many clouds. Ada cleaned a little this forenoon. I done the cooking. this afternoon I have been working on Ada's  dress. I get along slow for I dont have material to do with. I dont like to make over an old dress any way. they had a wonderful good time last evening if it did rain. raised the flag and marched to the hall then had speaches. Stephen said Gallanger was very smart. the hall was full. they did not get home till one oclock

Sunday, Oct. 21, 1888
It seemed good to get up this morning and find it pleasant to see a chance of having the sun shine all day, for so it seemed this morning, but it clouded up this afternoon and looked as if it was getting ready to storm again. but after a time the clouds blew over and it begun to grow colder and tonight it is real cold and windy. I guess it will be the coldest night we have had. Aunt Jane and Newell have been down and spent the day. we were real glad they came. we did not have any meeting today. Mr Amazeen is away to conference at Newton. Jim Morrison and his wife called a little while. we wanted them to stop but they said it would be so cold they had best get home before dark.

Monday, Oct. 22, 1888
It was real cold this morning. Stephen and I went to Exeter. I was very cold when I got there. May has a houseful of students that is she only gives them their meals. they lodge somewhere else. there are 14 that take their meals with her. she has a hired girl. she may have them if she wants to I dont. if she aint very careful she will work till she gets sick. then she will have to give up. we called at Aunt Jane's when we came home. she said she got home nicely Sunday afternoon. she and Nora want us to go up there and spend the evening. Will has gone to band meeting Kit has been in. Ada washed, got the clothes all dry.

I had to finish this afternoon. I thought I had better finish for tomorrow we shall have to cook and clean. after I got done ironing I went out doors to work, raked up some chips, picked a few beans, dug up my gladiolis bulbs and put them and some other plants down cellar. I guess we have got our harvesting most done now. now I want to get the cleaning done soon. Ada has gone to Kits. Just and Will have gone to North hill.

I intended to go to the Aid Society tonight but Abbott Zip and Lauris came up. they got here before we had finished supper. I was sorry it happened so for I have not been to a meeting for a long time.

we commenced to use the new coal today.
Saturday, Oct. 27, 1888
It has been dull all day. tonight it is raining hard. I guess there wont be any torch light procession in Rye tonight. I am sorry it is so rainy for them. they will be disappointed I meant to finish Ada's dress today but couldn't get to it. I have finished Stephen's stockings. an old saying is that there is never but one Saturday in a year, that the sun dont shine out some part of the day. this must be the one this year, for it certainly has not shone out today. I think I will take notice and put it down in my diary and see if that old saying comes true. I am rather inclined to doubt it.

Sunday, Oct. 28, 1888
This has been a dull foggy day, very disagreeable. part of the time it has rained. we did not any of us go to meeting it seemed so wet. Will and Ada went down to Kit's awhile and after supper they went down to Nell's. Ada says she has some new half curtains for her sitting room, very pretty lace ones. I built a fire in the sitting room today with the new coal, commenced in the cook stove yesterday. Fred Cotton came down this morning to see if I knew what was good for a run round. his Mother thought she was going to have one. Justin has hired Frank Brown's trombone.

Monday, Oct. 29, 1888
Pleasant and very windy. Ada had to put up a line in the backyard to hang the clothes on, it was so windy she could not put them on the frame. they got dry before dinner all but the flannels. they were all dry tonight. I had quite a fall this morning off of the platform of the clothes frame. hurt my side. it pains me considerable tonight. then I sprained my ancle and that aches so I feel about used up tonight. Will has gone to Rye. the republicans are having a torch light procession and flag raising and the band is going to play. Ada has been down to Kit's this evening.

I lined the robe that has needed a new lining so long. Very pleasant, more mild than yesterday but pretty windy. I made a few pies this morning then went to sewing on a tire for Leon. I have got it all done but the buttons and buttonholes. the band is going to play here in town tonight for the democrats. I expect they intend to have a great time. they ought to they have been long enough getting ready. there is to be a republican rally at Hampton tonight. Nute and Sulloway are to be there to speak. Stephen and I are going. I haven't been to any demonstration of any kind this fall. I dont seem to be as much interested as the rest are.

Thursday, Nov. 1, 1888
Another lovely day. it seems more now like Sept weather than it has for two months. real indian summer but rather late in the season. We got home from Hampton last night at ½ past 11 oclock. Will got to Adna's corner just as we did so he rode home with us. there was a crowd at Hampton. I did not particularly fancy Mr Sulloway. I liked Mr Nute well. the music was fine. Newberryport Band. I finished one of Leon's tires and begun another. Ada and Leon have gone down to Kit's and Nell's this afternoon. Stephen and I are going to Hampton to relief corps. the band plays in Rye for the democrats tonight.

Still another beautiful day. we can apreciate this lovely weather, we have had such a disagreeable fall. We got home from Hampton last night ¼ of 11 oclock. Will got home first. We have done the mending and a little cooking today, have to cook most every day.— Tonight Will has gone to Hampton to play for a democratic rally. it is very windy, not a good night for torch lights. this evening makes the 5th evening in succession that the band has played. I should think they would get played out. Kit has been up awhile this evening. Mrs Moulton Nell and the children have gone to Hampton.

Sunday, Nov. 4, 1888
It has seemed good to have a pleasant Sunday so to go to meeting. I am all the one that has been from here. Stephen and Leon carried me and came for me after Sabbath school. Will is most sick with a sore throat. he has not been out any where today. Stephen said he could not get a chance to go to meeting if he wanted to, he had so many callers. I guess the chief topic of conversation was politics. he has had both parties. Orrin Batchelder Charles Brown Justin Moulton Leavitt Dalton George Cotton George Marden Otis Brown George Tarlton Nat & Atwell. Kit came up this afternoon.

Monday, Nov. 5, 1888
It has been pleasant but real windy. Ada washed, got the clothes all dry and I ironed most all but the starched clothes. Will's throat was a little better this morning so he went to the shop. tonight when he came home it was swelled some on the outside. Ada put some pork on it. I hope it will be better in the morning the band went to Portsmouth to play tonight but he did not go, he did not feel able. Justin and Kit have been up and spent the evening. Justin brought up his trombone. I think he is doing real well. I guess he will make a good player.

Stephen did not get home last night till late. they went to Hampton but did not get any news to depend upon, but tonight when they came from the shop they were full of it. the word tonight is that the Republicans have beat. I hope they have but am almost afraid to believe it for fear it will be contradicted tomorrow. Will and Ada have been to Kit's.

Thursday, Nov. 8, 1888

Will has gone with Justin to the depot to see about celebrating the election of Harrison. Ada is over to Kit's to wait with her till they get home. it is Aid Society night, too rainy to go. Belle and Fannie were down this afternoon. George Marden has been in all the evening. I am sorry it rains before the house is shingled.

Monday, Nov. 12, 1888
Another beautiful day. Ada washed, I hung out the clothes for her so she could be working in the house, for we wanted to get them dry as quick as possible, as Atwell and Charley were shingling and the dirt blew off the house on the clothes. they dried so quick the dirt did not stick to them. they have finished shingling. now we are waiting to have the chimney fixed. I dont know when we shall get that done. After dinner I ironed a few things. Alvin has been down this evening. Atwell and Sarah have been in. Will has gone to Rye to band meeting. went with Justin.

Tuesday, Nov. 13, 1888
It has been pleasant but quite chilly this morning it looked like snow. I am afraid we shall have some snow before a great while, but I hope not. Ada ironed while I was making cake to carry to the republican celebration tonight. (I made two sheets) then I ironed the remainder of the clothes while she was sweeping the chambers. they made a great deal of dirt in the large chamber doing the shingling. Stephen has just got home. he has got chinese lanterns and candles and flags to trim and light the house tonight. now we are going to the Centre to John Smith's to supper so to ride back here in the coach and ride in the procession

Today Mother and I, Aunt Sally and Aunt Lydia have been to Mrs Garland's at Rye to spend the day. we called for them and brought them home.

Thursday, Nov. 15, 1888
It commenced to rain about 11 oclock this forenoon and rained hard till after supper now it is very misty most as bad as rain. I am very sorry for Hampton people. they were going to have their celebration if it had been pleasant and it must have been quite a disappointment. now they will have it the first pleasant evening Stephen and Ada were going. Mother dont feel very well today. I guess it was too much excitement for her yesterday, going so far. she cant bear much of a jaunt. Justin has been in this evening. we got four eggs today

Friday, Nov. 16, 1888

Ada said when they came from Hampton it snowed fast. they got home about half past one oclock. they didn't think the time as a whole was so good as they had here but they had a good time. it is a very nice day today and this evening bids fair to be a very light one. there is a large moon. I am going to Hampton to a special meeting of the relief corps. Stephen brought me a postal tonight telling of it and as he was out so late last night he does not feel able to go tonight so I am going alone.

It was real dull this morning commenced to rain about the middle of the forenoon and has rained most of the time ever since but now it looks lighter as if it would clear off before morning. the band were going to Portsmouth tonight to play for a celebration there if it had been pleasant I presume they will go tomorrow night if it is pleasant Ada has washed today put the white clothes to soak, hung the colored ones up in the shop. It cleared of in the night, is quite pleasant but very windy. Ada got her clothes out early, got them all dry. she ironed part of them. I cooked some, then commenced on the waist of Ada's garnet dress. it has bothered me a good deal to get it out but by piecing considerable I guess I shall manage to get it out. it will take me some time to make it the days are so short. Addie Cotton has just been in. she is going to the Lodge tonight, says I can go with her. I think I will go as I have not been since the first of July I believe.

Ther. 12a    Wednesday, Nov. 21, 1888
We got home from Hampton about 10 oclock. it was real cold. Stephen did not go. This was the coldest morning we have had this fall. Will came home at noon got the apples down cellar and got in the shingles. it looked very much like snow this forenoon, in fact it did snow a little a number of times. nearly all the forenoon was squally. this afternoon has been quite pleasant and so is this evening. pretty cold: I just looked at the glass it is 17 above zero. Will and Ada, Justin and Kit, George and Nell have gone to Rye the band plays.

Thursday, Nov. 22, 1888
Ada and Will got home from Rye at half past two oclock. Ada says they had a splendid supper. Turkey and all kinds of pies and cake, banannas grapes and apples. I hope now they have got done celebrating for this fall. it has been pleasant but cold most all day. now just at night it looks as if we were going to have a snow squall. I shall have to go to Hampton even if it does storm for it is inspection and that cant be put off. I have made my fruit cake today for Thanksgiving. made two loaves. had very good luck. it seems as cold as winter but I must wrap up and go to Hampton

Friday, Nov. 23, 1888
We got home from Hampton at quarter of one oclock it did not snow when we came home but it snowed hard when we were going down. we had a very nice inspection. Mrs Moore is very nice. I liked her very much, but we miss Mrs Green so much. we shall have to learn to get along without her. I am afraid she will never be any better. she will be missed very much. I made a loaf of light pound cake today and put citron in it and frosted it, had excelent luck with it. Justin Tarlton is sick. I dont know what ails him. Ada and Kit went into school this afternoon.

Saturday, Nov. 24, 1888
Part of the day has been quite pleasant and part has seemed real dull and looked very much like snow. I guess one of these days we shall get it. I dread the thought of having the ground covered with snow. I have cooked and finished my mending. I had considerable this week. I guess Justin must be better for Ada saw him looking out the window. Stephen went to Portsmouth this afternoon intended to come back at ¼ past five but he missed the train. went to Bezie's to supper, then went to the stable and hired a man to bring him home. we felt real worried till he got home. the boys have been here playing. it is now 11 oclock.

Sunday, Nov. 25, 1888
It snows hard. no going to meeting from here today. if it had been pleasant Will and Ada were going to Hampton to a meeting for the Mechanics Assiciation at the Baptist church. Evening—This has been a dreadful stormy day and tonight it is terrible. a pretty tough snow storm for the first one. if this is a specimen of the storms we are going to have this winter I guess we shall have a hard winter. some people are prophesying a very cold time this winter. it has commenced rough enough. there has been no one in today but Atwell. something that dont very often happen Sunday. oh! yes there has Fred brought the milk

Monday, Nov. 26, 1888
When we got up this morning it rained and blowed furiously and it continued to do so all day and is still blowing this evening. part of the time it rains pouring. this has been the worst storm we have had for years. it was very icey this morning Stephen was almost afraid to start for the shop with old John for fear he would slip down but he said tonight that he got along very well. Ada washed put the white clothes to soak, hung the flannels and colored clothes in the shop. I made 14 mince pies and 2 apple ones this forenoon. this evening Will killed 6 chickens. I dressed them. Stephen & Ed Tufts helped pick them.

Tuesday, Nov. 27, 1888
Another very stormy day it was raining hard this morning when we got up and has rained all day. part of the day it has just poured. tonight it dont look one mite more like clearing off than it did last night. there were none of the clothes in the shop dry so we could not iron any of them. I made 7 apple pies, 4 squash sweetened with sugar and two with molasses. Ada made a sheet of current cake and I have got the chickens all parboiled ready to bake fry and make chicken pie of. the wind sounds tonight as if it was going to be colder. it is a terribly stormy time for this season of the year.

Wednesday, Nov. 28, 1888
This has been a beautiful day. it cleared of last night warm and it has been warm enough all day to have the door open an unusually mild day for November and the day before Thanksgiving. I believe we are all ready now for Thanksgiving. Ada put the clothes out today, got them all dry and ironed, finished the last this evening. I have made rice pies and a chicken pie, got my pudding made and chicken all ready to bake, all but the dressing. cranberry jelly all made. in all I have made 35 pies. I guess we have enough to last awhile. Stephen has gone to Lodge

Thursday, Nov. 29, 1888
It looked so pleasant last evening we thought it would be a nice day for Thanksgiving but when we got up it was very dull and before noon it commenced to rain and has rained most of the time since, and now it is bedtime. George Foster called this forenoon for Will to go to Rye with him. I told him to invite his folks to come down here this evening. he thought they would come but it has been so rainy I guess they thought best to stay at home. John Mallon was here to dinner. he said May and Grace started with him but it was so dull they thought they would not come so he carried them back and came down alone.

Friday, Nov. 30, 1888
It has tried all day to be pleasant but has not succeeded very well. part of the time the sun shone out. but most of the day has been quite cloudy. this evening it is bright starlight. we have a great deal of changable weather. I have been trying to work a little on Ada's basque but I get along very slowly. I dont like to do so much planing unless I have a large quantity to work with and that I havn't got this time. Mr and Mrs Foster and Charley have been here and spent the evening. we have had a very pleasant time. they brought us a jug of sweet cider, very nice.

"better late than never" Will Moulton fired the chimney this forenoon. it looks very much better. Mother has kept account of the number of eggs the hens have laid this week. 32 in all. I think that is doing well. they are beginning to do real well. I got 6 eggs today the most I have got any day this fall. Will has gone to the town hall. the band play there tonight. Ada has been over to Kit's awhile.

This has been a nice day to wash. I hung out most all the clothes for Ada should have done them all but Kit sent over to see if I would go over to her house and see if I knew what ailed her baby he was all broke out in large red bloches. I guess it is nothing but a teeth humor. Ada has been over this evening she says he seems bright and not broke out so much. we ironed this afternoon till time to get supper. got the clothes most all ironed. tonight it looks and seems very much like dull weather. I do hope it wont storm tomorrow for that surprise party for John Berry is tomorrow night. Will has gone to Rye.

Tuesday, Dec. 4, 1888

Stephen came to supper. we were going to spend the evening but Will came up and said Leon was sick so we came right home and he seemed so sick we thought we had better have the Dr so Justin went for him. he was away but came as soon as he got home. he left three kinds of medicine and is coming as early in the morning as he can so he must think he is pretty sick. he has cholera infantum

Tonight he dont seem quite so well in his bowells. the Dr did not come till afternoon he changed his medicine but I am afraid the powders are going to make him sick. he acts as if they were. Sunday, Dec. 9, 1888
It has snowed all day, part of the time quite fast, but it has been so mild that the snow does not make much show. Ada has caught water enough to wash with tomorrow. it has thawed as fast as it fell on the roof of the house all day. Leon didn't seem so well this morning he commenced to vomit so we sent for the Dr. he seems better tonight. I am sitting up with him. I think I shall get a chance to lie down awhile by and by if he rests as well as he is now. we have had a number in today. Atwell George Tarlton George Cotton George Marden Jennie Emma & Arthur and David called to the door to see how Leon was.

Monday, Dec. 10, 1888
This has not been a very sun-shiny day. there has seemed to be a dampness in the air all day, not a good drying day. Ada washed, but the clothes did not get dry, only about a dozen pieces. those I ironed this afternoon. we are going to leave the white clothes outdoors all night. the others I have hung up in the shop. Leon seems better today. the Dr is coming tomorrow. he thought he should not need to come again. I hope he will get along nicely now and I think he will for he seems so much better. Hattie came home last night with the mumps Ella and Ari are better. Alvin has been down this evening.

This has been a very pleasant day but terrible windy. the wind has not blowed so hard for a long time. it went down some with the sun but has begun to blow again. it is real cold. Leon is nicely, has seemed like himself today. I hope he is going to fat up a little now. he grew very poor while he was so sick. I am thankful he dont feel as he did a week ago tonight. Stephen Will Ada and Kit have gone to Hampton to a fair given by the relief corps. they had Justin's horse. Stephen was going to the Lodge first. Thursday, Dec. 13, 1888
This has been a pleasant cold day and tonight it is real cold. I thought I was going down to Hampton to the Fair but when Stephen came home from the shop he thought it was so cold that if I didn't want to go very bad we had better stay at home so we staid. Ada has moved into her chamber today and carried Leon's crib up there and has put him up there to sleep tonight. Kit has been in this evening. Sarah came in. she had been up to the vestry to see about having a christmas tree at the church. she says they decided to have one christmas night in the meeting house.

Another cold blue day. the sun has not shone out very much. part of the time it has snowed a little but it has been so cold it could not snow. We have got half of a pig Stephen bought it of Leavitt. if it is this weather the pork will keep some time. Leon rested nicely last night. I guess he was glad to get back up stairs again. he had been real bright and well today, as well as he was before he was taken sick. Irving came down for his mail today. True came tonight. Ada has been over to Kit's tonight awhile. she says that Nell says they are going to have a fine time christmas evening at the church

Not so cold today. I guess from appearances the weather will moderate and snow. it is quite cloudy tonight. I do hope it wont storm tomorrow I dont like stormy sundays. Stephen has been abed a long time. he did not sleep any last night. his leg troubled him so. he got up at 11 oclock and he did not get a wink of sleep till after 5 oclock this morning. when he has such a time with his leg it just tires him all out. Will has gone to Rye to band meeting. Ada has been over to Kit's a little while this evening. choir meeting to Nell's tonight to practice for christmas. I shant go so dont meet to practice.

Such a change in the weather. today has been mild and thawey. Friday was so cold we did not want to go out doors if we were not really obliged to and today we could go out without any hood on and feel comfortable. this evening it is dull. I dont know what kind of weather we shall have tomorrow but it seems like rain. still the moon is large perhaps it will clear the clouds off. I have been to church today Will carried me up and came for me. Alvin and Jen came down this afternoon. Will and Ada have been over to Kit's this evening. Sarah says Ella has got the mumps.

Monday, Dec. 17, 1888
It has rained hard all day. this evening Kit has been over she has just gone home and it is raining pouring. a very bad night to be out. it is such bad traveling. Stephen says it is the worst going we have had this fall. what changes we do have! and so sudden. last Friday the glass was only 4 above zero. now a fire is uncomfortable. Ada washed put the white clothes to soak, hung the flannels and colored clothes up in the shop. Sarah put her clothes out doors. I guess now she wishes they were in the house for the wind blows very hard. Atwell cut up the pig for us. the pork is not very thick

This has been a pretty good day, not quite so much sun as I should liked to have had on the clothes but the most of them got dry. those that didn't we hung on the frame in the house and I guess they will be dry by morning it is a beautiful evening the moon shines very bright Justin and Will have gone to Rye. Kit and Ada were going but they gave it up. Ada has been over there a while this evening. Atwell got me some evergreen and I have made two wreaths to carry up to the grave yard and one to put on Leon's christmas tree. I have made mince meat today.

It looked very much like snow this morning and it did try to snow quite a while this forenoon but it was too cold to snow much. Ada thought she must go to Portsmouth if it was dull and as Sarah and Hattie were going they all went together. Ada got a number of presents for christmas. she said she had good success and felt well satisfied with what she got. Atwell got the tree today. we are going to have a little one for Leon. I think the one Atwell has got will be just the thing. we finished ironing today Ada ironed some before she went. I finished. I have worked some on a mat I am braiding

Friday, Dec. 21, 1888
It has been dull most all day looked very much like snow. towards night it cleared off and now it bids fair to be a beautiful evening. we have dull days and nice fair evenings. the moon is so large it burns off the clouds as soon as it rises. I have done all my mending today for if it is pleasant I want to go to Portsmouth tomorrow. tonight Stephen Will and myself are going to the meeting house to hear Rev D. W. C. Durgin. he is to deliver his lecture on Iceland after the lecture there is to be a corn supper in the vestry. all for the benefit of the Aid Society. I hope they will do well.

Ther. 4a    Saturday, Dec. 22, 1888
We got home from the church at half past eleven. had a nice time. the lecture was splendid. everything passed off well and I guess we shall clear over 20 dollars for the Aid society, and if we do that will be doing well. I thought when we came home last night it looked so dull that when we got up this morning we should find the ground white with snow, for then it looked very much like it, but it cleared off before morning cold and was very pleasant this morning but terrible cold only 4 above zero. I have been to Portsmouth. Stephen Ada & Kit have gone to Hampton this evening Will to Rye

Sunday, Dec. 23, 1888
This has been a very nice day, not quite so cold as we have had for two or three days. Will and I went to meeting. when we came home found John Mae and Grace here. I told them I wished they had waited and come Christmas. they had thought of that but were afraid it might be stormy and it was so pleasant today they thought best to improve it. before they went home Abbott Zip and Lauris came up. they did not stay very long, they thought it would be dark and it is such rough traveling. Abbott carried me up to the grave yard to put the wreaths on the graves.

Monday, Dec. 24, 1888
Such a nice day as this has been we have not had for a long time. almost as warm as summer. the ground has thawed so that it is real muddy and the water stands in places instead of ice as we have been having. Ada washed and got the clothes all dry this forenoon. this afternoon we have done all the ironing. we got the christmas tree we have had for Leon tonight all trimmed before night but we did not let him see it till we lighted the candles this evening. he was pleased. it did look real pretty all lit up. we all got something Leon a good many things. Kit was over. Cass called tonight. he had just home.

Tuesday, Dec. 25, 1888
Today is warmer and more pleasant (if that is possible) than yesterday. it dont seem like christmas day when we can sit down in the house with the doors and windows open and then feel uncomfortably warm. I think this will be a christmas to be long remembered. Fred came in upon us very unexpectedly this morning. we were all real glad to see him. he brought Will and Ada a very hadsome present. Ada a dressing case Will a shaving case. very nice plush cases. Will Fred Ada and Leon have gone to ride this afternoon. Stephen Ada Will and Fred have gone to the christmas tree at the school house this evening.

Thursday, Dec. 27, 1888
This has been a dull foggy day. part of the day it has rained. I have done my mending and worked a little on mat rags, but the day has seemed so short, it has been so dull that it made the afternoon seem very short. it was dark early. I had a lamp lighted when Mamie and Warren Lamprey came home from school. I think long evenings are nice but I like to have the days a little longer than they are now. We have had the Aid Society here tonight. it was so dull I didn't know as any one would come but there were a number. we had a nice time.

Saturday, Dec. 29, 1888
Part of the time today it has been real pleasant. then it would cloud up and look as if it was going to storm right away. tonight it is dull and I guess we shall have a stormy day tomorrow. I have been working on my mat part of the day. it begins to look now quite like a mat but it will take some time yet to finish it. I want to make it quite large if I have time and patience. Ada had to take Leon up this evening he cried so. I dont think he felt very well. she fixed something for him to take and after a time he got quiet. Will has gone to Rye.

Sunday, Dec. 30, 1888
This has been a nice mild day. the last Sunday in the year. how little we can any of us tell what will happen before the last Sunday in 1889. we have all been spared this year so far and we ought to be thankful that we have. many are mourning tonight the loss of near and dear friends. Will Ada and I have been to meeting. Stephen and Mother took care of Leon. he was real good. Stephen and I were going up to see Lewis & Ida after supper but just as we got ready to eat William and John Brown came. before we got through supper Alvin and Jen came down and staid till dark. Will and Ada have gone to meeting.

Another day part pleasant part stormy. Ada washed this forenoon got the clothes all out and it begun to rain so she took the colored ones down and hung them up in the shop, but towards noon it looked brighter and this afternoon has been nice. I have not felt very smart today. I did not sit up any this forenoon. at noon Will came home for Ada to go to Exeter so I got up. I put out the clothes that were in the shop and got them most all dry. so I took them all in before she got home. she got her a very pretty set of firs with the money she had christmas
