Camp Near Fairfax Station March 6 1863
 
Well Father
I will write you a few line to let you know that I am well an I hop you are all the same wee are still in camped hear at Fairfax station I do not no as I ever spent a winter any easery than I have this one wee doe not have much to do but drill a hour or two a day this is the third letter I have written since I have heard from any of you but I am in hops to get on to day Copral Bacon cut his throat with a razor yesterday I do not know the caus of it he has been unwell latly but not very sick thair is aman that was tenting with him an the night before he took him out an told him if he should bee taken a way he wanted him to take cair of his things yesterday tha was all out of the tent but him an Calven Green tented with him hee went to go in with armful of wood he opend the door an see him lay thair an see thair was blood on him an hit scart him and he holard com an see this man / my tent was next to his an I run out to see an two or three of us went in an tought he haid fainted away an bumped his nose an stooped down to take him up an wee see a razor all blood on the floor an an wee tak him up an found he had cut his throat from ear to ear dean said he haid a letter that he haid been studeing for a day or two an that fornon he burnt it tha thought he haid got the mitten if that was so he must been a dam fool I never see a gall that I wold cut my throat for yet an I do not no as he did it for that Albert Harris is well an soo bee all the rest of the boys I cant get an postage stamps out hear an I have not got but one left I want you to as soon as you get this an let me know what is going on up thair
