Sarah S. Yarborough (maiden name: Manly) was born on April 16, 1840, in Alabama. Her father probably died sometime before 1850, and she grew up in Marengo County, Alabama. She married N. S. Yarborough on June 17, 1858, and they had at least two children: Mary, born around 1860; and Neill, born around 1861. They lived in Sumter, Alabama, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1860, they owned $4,300 of real estate and $55,000 of personal property. Her husband probably died in the early 1860s, and she married George W. Bates on October 26, 1864.
They had at least seven children: Floyd, born around 1865; Paulena, born around 1867; James, born around 1869; George, born around 1872; Joseph, born around 1874; Estelle, born around 1874; and Blanche, born around 1876. They lived in Jones Bluff, Alabama, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1870, they owned $10,000 of real estate and $3,400 of personal property. They moved to Gainesville, Alabama, in the 1870s. She died on February 7, 1903.
