Camp Near Falmouth Va
Dec 4th 1862
Dear Sister
I have just finished dinner and have nothing to do this afternoon till dress parade which is ten minutes before sunset. We have one hours drill in forenoon which is just enough to keep us in health. We came to this place the day after Thanksgiving It is four or five miles from the camp that I wrote from last. It is farther down the river / The men have been busy building log shanties and chimnies and it makes this camp look different from our other camps. Yesterday afternoon we parked our pontoon train that look as though they were not to be used very soon There is a very large army around here and I cannot understand why Fredericksburgh is not taken There are more troops together here than I ever see before. The Capt. Duane that used to be with us was arrested for being absent with Gen. McClellan. We all call him Jimmy Duane. Gen. Weitzel who lately had command of an expedition from New Orleans was our lieutenant and Col Dutton of the 21st Conn was 2nd Lieutenant / with us last spring Three of our lieutenants have left us since Burnside took command and now there is only Cross and Gillespie
I did not have much of a Thanksgiving. We had roast beef but the trouble was that we did not have half enough I would liked to have been home that day pretty well. It is a year today since I got to Washington. It does not seem so long since I was at home I got Marthas letter yesterday. I suppose you are keeping school now. If you see Bill Brown tell him I have never received any letter from him. Remember me to Mr. Howes There is a fellow in this company named Prouty who has a brother Captain / of one of the Worcester Companies Did Mr. Lacount go as a private I do not expect to see much of any winter quarters. If I get a chance to build a log house to live in two or three months I shall be glad. good bye
