Jerome Bottomly to Sister, 26 February 1863
Camp Near Falmouth Va
Feb. 26th 1863
Dear Sister
It is very dull here it is so rainy, I have to keep inside my tent and I have nothing to do only bring wood for my fire and stand guard once in in about ten days.
There was a real northern snow storm here last Sunday, nearly covering us up, and to day it has been raining. We have great times snowballing. my arm is lame now throwing so many.
The party that Crossley is in is at Acquia Creek and will probably remain there for the present. they are having easy times. nothing to do only to tell the fatigue parties where to throw the dirt. there are two or three other parties off at different places. I do not know when I shall get the box. one box alone would not be forwarded from Washington. a quartermaster has to send for the boxes that belong to a regiment or brigade and government transportes them from Washington. those for this battalion were sent for a week ago last Saturday, and I am in hopes to get mine. they will all come together and so / Crossley will get his
I received the thread &c. I have got enough now to last me the rest of my time. I would like to have some postage stamps sent when you write again. We have soft bread now. They have built ovens and it is baked here in camp
You never wrote what you thought of the ring I sent you. I was made with the knife I gave Henry Fay. There is considerable talk here about furloughs and some of our fellows have gone home. Ten days is so short I do not think it hardly pays. I do not think I could get one anyway.
