Jerome Bottomly to Sister, 21 March 1863
Camp Near Falmouth Va
March 21st 1863

Dear Sister
I have nothing very particular to write but suppose you will expect to hear from me. I received both your letters and several papers. I am much obliged for all. it does not make much difference where you direct the letters only so they will come to the renouned army of the Potomac.

I expected to be on the march again by this time but it does not look so much like it now / for it commenced snowing ever since yesterday and has stormed ever since It is not very comfortable camping out this cold weather and I am in no hurry to start. I like to march pretty well when it is warm weather and the roads are not too dusty or muddy

I am having a pretty good time this winter. we get soft bread every other day and I have eaten six or eight pounds of butter. I got a box from home with some eatables.

March 28th
I am sorry I neglected writing to you for so long, I am always very glad to get a letter but I am apt to neglect answering it. It rains today as usual and I see no signs of the army moving. I am half through / my time now and begin to think it will not be long before I can go home. I have seen some hard times but no more than I wanted to see when I enlisted. this kind of life does not seem as hard now as it did at first.

I hear from home that Martha and Nancy are both going to teach this summer. some folks used to think that I would teach, but I recon they were mistaken. I am much obliged to Milton for telling Collins where to write to me. I have been in this camp four months today, that is a long time to be in one camp and I shall be glad / when we go away from this river, though I am as comfortable here as I want to be. the country looks like a great wilderness as all the fences and trees have been taken for wood.

good bye
Jerome
